Just got this running last night, found a couple things that are troubling me. While I had it running I pulled the plugs off and it did make a change in the motor so it appears to be firing on both.

Have oil running down the leg from unknown source, I dont see any oil inside the lower motor cover thats pooling up and running down.

And getting some water seeping out from what I believe is the headgasket, its coming from the dark spot in the picture, pretty much center of top to bottom of the head. Getting a somewhat steady drip of water, but its not streaming out.

Not giving up yet, but If Ive got some serious problems here I may go take a look at this motor, could be another can of worms but its really cheap, plus he has the entire leg to make it a long shaft which I could part out. Any opinions on these motors or can tell me anything. Its a '59 50hp, said he bought it on a boat from out of state and the guy that sold it to him claimed it had run a week before it was sold, the motor was taken off the boat before hauling it and he never did anything with it to see if it ran after he got it.

Personally I would not worry about either leak. But some folks might differ. The water leak is minor and water is plentiful when running a boat and the oil leak is probably the gas/oil residual from combustion that is going out the exhaust anyway.

Looks like a good running motor. The oil leak ...... who cares ....... But the head gasket . I'd pull the plugs and do a compression test. You sure it's a 50? I could be wrong but it looks a lot more like a 40 not that it matters. Do that compression test so you know no water is getting inside the combustion chamber.

I did a compression test before I got it running using the pull start and got 60 top and 61 on the bottom. Was told doing it that way 60 was about all I could hope for.

Could you guys tell me why you wouldnt worry about it? Im relatively new to these motors and have never tore one completely apart to know the anatomy of how it works or whats going where...... so just trying to do some learning and curious why you think that. Guess I was expecting throw it in the garbage for a reply, dont get me wrong, I like the answer, guess Im just looking for peace of mind. :D

The compression is what I'd worry about. 60#'s a side is pretty low. Although that is a hard beastie to pull. Does it have electric start? Try the compression reading with electric starter.

The 50 is a cool old motor but there are some problems.Very thirsty. Some parts are hard to find. Depending on the year Cap and rotor could be very expensive and hard to, find. Not sure if its the 59.Lot of low end grunt but not too fast.Unbelievably that big brute is lighter than todays 50 hp

I lent out my compression tester so when I get that back Im going to give it a go the right way. When I got the 60 per side the motor was mounted on my work bench, so I was basically standing behind the motor, turned it as far as I could and was pulling from the side of it. So it wasnt a quick pull either, Im sure it would read much higher otherwise, was just happy they where both the same.

Ok, so the water leaking from the head gasket. Is it possible that its getting in the motor, or would it more than likely not be running on a cylinder that has water in it?

And for the oil leaking down the leg, how does that happen? Im going to use auto terms here, but is there a gasket between the head and the exaust manifold that is leaking?
