Hi
Not too sure what you mean, was the water in the gearbox oil?
Where did you fit the 0 ring on shift rod or drive shaft?
Do you mean the grommit in the w/pump w/pipe joint.

there is milky oil in the lower end ,today i drained old oil refilled with fresh, used new plug gaskets. have not run motor yet..the o-ring,i replaced with a little smaller ,fits below the splines on the drive shaft ,is it suppose to be there?there was one there when i first dropped it the first time ever ,but dont see one in my parts manual.i fitted a small piece of rubber hose on the end of the water tube that at the top seems to seal better than it was havent tried the motor yet

As far as I can tell you need a sealing grommet at both ends of the water pipe.
There is usually an 0 ring fitted into the hole for the shift rod.
Right now we are to the drive shaft, an 0 ring is shown fitted to the drive shaft above the water pump.
As it has been some years since I worked on one of these ,I cant remember
what this 0 ring is for.
As for the oil in the water one idea is to saw steel inflater part from an old bike innertube(with valve inside) drill and tap a spare gearbox drain plug
and with a little ptfe tape round thread ,screw the cycle valve into the
modified drain plug.
connect to garage air line or car foot pump and put in 20 psi NO MORE.
This should locate any leaks in seals.
If no serious leaks found stop pumping in are and watch how long it takes
for the air to escape pressure will escape but if all is well very slowly

Re: 65 18 hp lower end

I recently re-sealed the gearcase on my '61 28hp johnson.
The o-ring on the driveshaft keeps water out of the splines. This is very important. You sometimes hear about folks having trouble dropping the lower unit because the drive shaft getting rusted in place.
Also, you should always lube the driveshaft splines before putting it back together.

I agree, you should run it a while and see if the new plug gaskets solves the gearcase water problem.

Yes, you need the O ring at the top of the drive shaft, it stops water from spiraling up the shaft and rusting the splines in the bottom of the crankshaft.

And what pee hole are you talking about? The '65 18's did not have a pee hole. They mixed the exhaust and the water which exited halfway up the back of the engine. You should be able to put your hand in this stream after running at WOT and it should not be too hot to leave it there.

the hole that i think would be the pee hole is a hole that is exactly were the watertube grommet is .the grommet was actually trying to come out of it. i had to dig the grommet out, it looked as though the tube was not seated propaly ,i hope to find that grommet, any way i can stck a small wire inside that hole and goes clean through .is this not the pee hole?????
