I have a 1972 65 hp electric shift evinrude that runs great and it shifts great while in my yard hooked up to a water hose. I was really happy about the way it ran and shifted. I put it in the lake and it fired up good and ideled but as soon as I put it in gear (foward or reverse) it dies. My first thought was mabey it was ideling was a little low ( im thinking a little more pressure and resistance in the water) so I turn the idle up some and no differance, still dies as soon as I put it in gear. Back in my yard does great. I am lost what could it be??? Thanks in advance!

Re: 65 hp dies when shifting in water

You have no resistance on the prop or exhaust system when running the motor on the muffs. When the motor is in the water, there is backpressure on the exhaust and resistance against the prop.

While your idle may be set too low, you may also have one or more cylinders not firing. What you are experiencing is a classic symptom of such a problem.

Time to do some troubleshooting.

Check compression, spark, fuel delivery and spark plug condition after running. Go from there. Post your results for all to analyze.

I checked the above stated and heres what I found.

Fuel is getting to the carbs
I installed new plugs
I checked compression it was...

132
140
131

I also checked lower unit fluid it was tan in color at first as it drained it did clear up a bit I didnt see any metal so I refilled with type C. I noticed there were no O rings on the drain or vent plugs so I added them.

I pulled all 3 carbs and looked them over and cleaned them. I noticed after removing the bowls that one float moved stiff and the needle valve stuck in the up position so I ordered a rebuild kit and it works fine now.

I thought I had found the problem when I found the a carb not working right. After all that I put the boat in the lake and it runs real good untill I put it in gear, Then it just dies. So wadda ya think??? Thanks again.

You set the idle in the water and in gear, right? At ~ 650 RPM.

As soon as I put it in gear it dies...No time to set the idle there.

set your idle faster in muffs 1,000 rpms, then fine tune it in the water. use the idle speed stop screw.
