Well I adjusted my shiftlinkage all the way towards the boat without losing Neutral..

Basically I can't get reverse working it just grinds away when i try put it on reverse in the water. I can speed up nothing helps..

I can't adjust the shift linkage anymore or i lose neutral so what could be the problem and roughly how much to fix it if i do it myself..

Someone told me the camshaft houseing or some plastic bit that always screws up might be ruined. Can someone go a little in depth for me?

Also when i put it in Forward and go turn the prop by hand it makes this clicking sound while the props spinning like if it were in gear properly. When i put in neutral and spin hardly nothing is heard like if it were in neutral normally. Though when i stick it in reverse all the way the prop spins freely both ways and ABSOLUTELY NO CLICKING AT ALL IS HEARD. Its like if it were spinning on a free axis

Hey guy, I've experienced the same problem on a 73 65 hp merc. I was able to determine that the gear in the foot had gone bad by unhooking the shift cable and from teh engine and shifting the the lever arm that is attached to the shaft that runs the lenght of the foot. If it will engage the gear it will be very hard to turn. Odds are yours won't engage either. Have you noticed if there is any metal shavings in the lower gear unit. The drain screw is magnitized and if metal shavings are stuck to it, odds are you have a gear problem. If you can find it, this very question was asked by me last year by heyitstim. Maybe those replys will help. Good luck friend I feel your pain, I ended up selling my 65hp to a shop for parts amd found an old 80 hp mercury, I'm currently fighting it now. Tim

Also look at www.dougrussell.com. They have a pretty good parts list with diagrams for that lower unit. It might help to see it broken apart so you know how it works. Just a thought. Good luck, Tim Arkansas, USA

Hi Y2j,Went to the library the manual was out so Ive reserved it hopefully it will be back soon.
I went thru this type of problem with my 65.Is the guy you bought the gearbox off a mechanic or a backyarder?I went down the road you are going & it ended up costing me alot of time & money. In hindsight it would have been alot faster & cheaper to buy a recond gearbox from goldseal in melbourne. If the splines arent lined up you wouldnt have the box bolted to the leg.It could be that when the box was fitted it wasnt in forward gear although I think its more likely that the box is naff.I would take it off & find neutral & forward & reverse by turning the shift shaft by hand. Then put it in forward along with the control lever, check that the reverse lock ramp is in the right place & reinstall if you still havent got reverse or you couldnt find reverse when the box was out take it back to the guy you got it off & either get him to fix it or get your money back.In forward gear you should have clicking when you turn the prop clockwise,in neutral no noise & in reverse you shouldnt be able to turn the prop either way without the driveshaft turning.Good luck
