'67 40hp Evinrude shift bushing replacement

I seen a post a while ago but failed the search feature. So here it goes.

What's the trick to removing the brass bushing in the lower gearcase?
My thoughts were by using a 5/16" threaded rod, a stack of machine screw washers and pressing it out that way using a small socket as the receiver end of the bushing..
Last time I changed the oring I just picked it out of the housing and miraculously put new one in, reverse order. To say the least it leaked.
Engine is a 1967 Evinrude 40hp

I tap mine a few threads and screw in a bolt and then drive it out from the other side.

I tap a few threads and PULL it from the upper sde.
