'67 80 johnson super seahorse runs in reverse only

Well I just bought a '69 Glaspar Avalon with a 67 Johnson SuperSeahorse 80HP. Now the silly thing wants to run in reverse with the throttle is placed in forward. will barely spin when in reverse. Seems strong when running. but confused about it.

Is this going to be a R N R on the lower unit? Maybe a wiring repair gone bad(the last owner replaced the start selenoid, etc on the powerhead. I changed the lower units oil and replaced the seals. was a little milky but I have seen worse. Any Ideas.. Already had a buddy tell me to buy a Counter rotating prop(HAHA). HELP:%

1. Check your linkages.
2. There is a long vertical shaft that moves the distributor when shifting, check the top to make sure it isn't worn. It may stick or jam.
3. Check the shift box and make sure there are no jams.

I had some of these issues with my 67'. Hope this helps a bit.

Yeah its a electramatic. I took a meter to the control wires at the switch. weird readings.. made no sense. so read in the archives to put power to each wire. Works in both forward and reverse at 12 volts to the LU. Fired it up and it works. So switch is bad. anyone know if i can get the switch or if there is maybe a RadioShack work around?
Is Neutral powered or not??? Have the manual but hey I do better with Computers than this. HELP!!

There is power to the shift solenoids in neutral and reverse only. In forward, neither solenoid is activated. There may be aftermarket switches available but not sure. Parts for those old motors can be tough to find. Some dealers have old used motors for parts, which may be an option for you.
