I have a 1967 Mercury, model 110, 9.8hp. The problem is it stays in forward gear. It won't shift into neut. or reverse. I have the lower unit off and I can shift it into forward/neut./reverse with no problem. It mates up with the shift shaft from the top half but I think it maybe stripped causing the shift shaft from the lower unit to not move when I shift from Forward to reverse. I want to take the shaft out of the upper section and look at it but it doesn't look to be easy. Is there a simple process to get it out of there?

Thanks

If you can shift the unit with it removed from the engine, either the spines on the shift shaft are striped or one of the gears on the likage under the carb are.

Are you turning the propshaft when trying to shift (motor not running) ?

You need to pull the powerhead to remove the upper shiftshaft.

If the splines are ok,the shiftshaft maybe rusted too thin, and just flexing, instead of turning the lower unit shaft (spring tension on the shift cam).

DHP
