Re: Well I did it now!

Well I started the day off having to do honeydo's. Lawn mowed and weedeaten and doggie land mines all picked up:eek:. So my buddy shows up with another sign for me today, talk about timing. So here is new patch just sitting on the bolts, did not really take me long to cut it out. Can ya guess what kind of sign it is?

100_0498.jpg

I wanted to leave it the way it was be figured that I had better not. I got the coating off pretty easy with a heat gun but that left the glue residue. I tried MEK, ACETONE, scotchbrite with both, and alone with water and could not get the gunk off:(. Finally wife said lets try some GOOFOFF, man it worked. I soaked a rag in the GOOFOFF and just rubbed the glue and then scrapped it with a metal putty knife. But it did still take me a long time to get it all cleaned up, like about 4 hours.

I think that this is a much better fit, what do you all think?

Nice work Kelly, that should be stronger than the factory built it and give you some peace of mind:)

Love seeing the variety of sources for parts:D

Perfect there Kelly. Turned that stop sign into a go sign. That thing should work.

Re: Well I did it now!

Stop would have looked great on the back! Too bad it had to go :D.

Looks like things are coming along pretty well for 'ya!

I have the same auto bilge pump as well. I borrowed EZ's idea too, and it was on sale at the time for me as well...

Re: Well I did it now!

Thanks guys, I am hoping that putting that patch back there will make it a lot stronger as well.

Yea BG, I really wanted to leave that red stop sign in place but figured it would just cause me to much of a headache down the road. Yea Ez was the one that pointed me in the direction of the bilge pumps. I got an auto one and a manual one as well, one for backup just in case.

I know this is going to be a slow build for me guys. I really thought I would be faster at it than what I am doing, guess am getting a bit slower and softer as I get older. But am going to keep at it and just maybe I will have a second SC in the driveway after my trip back to Idaho to see family next month.:D

Re: Well I did it now!

Got to looking at the rear of the boat as I still have to remove the transom. So here is a start to things, the rear transom cap is now off.

100_0502.jpg

Here is the board that was supporting the front part of the transom cap. It is all broke and split, the po had put screws into it and they split the wood.

100_0503.jpg

Well after removing the cap found that where it attached to the sides that most of the holes where the rivets attached were ripped out.

Re: Well I did it now!

Here is how one of the supports that was under the cap was found.

100_0508.jpg

And here is what I found for the other side support, yes that is all that there was there.

100_0509.jpg

And here is what I found for the center support, and again that is all that was there.

100_0510.jpg

Here is the other side of the center support bracket, no screws or anything there. Not even any wood for the support. You can also see the top of the transom pretty well now, not looking so hot.

100_0511.jpg

Not sure if you can see it real well but this is the reason that I pulled the transom cap in the first place. I am going to try and straighten it out if at all possible.

Re: Well I did it now!

This is the top piece of trim that goes on the transom cap, not sure that you can see it very well. But it has a pretty good bend/dent in the center of it. The PO had a manual winch on the transom cap to hold the OD up and probably to lift it as well.

100_0516.jpg

The end of the transom cap with more ripped out rivet holes. Really am starting to wonder how many of the rivets in the upper deck are going to be like this.

100_0514.jpg

Here is one of the snaps for the top that I don't have. You can see the corrosion in the center of it, I put a drill bit just in the center and as soon as I pull the trigger it snaps off.

100_0513.jpg

So I decided to pull all of the screws that go around the transom. Used my air ratchet and a screw driver, could only break the nut loose. Found that the ratchet is not able to turn the nut off, got out the impact gun and gave that a try. Ha, no luck that was either. Could not hold the screw driver in the screw head now, could not find any help once again. So out came one of my best friends, my dewalt angle grinder. As you can can see I took the grinder right now the middle of the screw and nut, splitting the nut in half to get it off. Had to do this to every screw on the transom.

100_0515.jpg

The more I thought about all the things I have done for others and then they not wanting to help the more determined I got. I could not just quit right there. After the screws were removed I tried to pull the transom, it was a not budge thing. So I screwed a 2x4 to it and tried Ez's method of prying, broke first 2x4 and then could not get it budge with the 4x4 I wound up using. Was not sure what to do and then it hit me, I have a 12 ton bottle jack. So some short pieces of 2x4 to help extend the jack a bit. Jaked it up and it would not freaking budge, I beat on the edges with a hammer next to the channel and still no go. I then took a screw driver and drove it under the edges of the bracket and it popped loose. I really did not think that I would be able to lift the transom wood out of the boat and onto the ground. You can see that it is a ways to the ground from the inside of the boat.

Here is a pic of the transom out and sitting by the house, man that thing was a bear to do by myself. But hot dang I got it done and did not hurt myself to bad either.

100_0519.jpg

You can see from the pics that every screw hole has corrosion around it. And believe it or not but the wood is still very strong, I can still barely put a dent in it with a screw driver.

Re: Well I did it now!

This is the corrosion on the inside of the transom after the wood was removed. This is in the bottom of the channel that the wood sits in, that junk is really thick and looks nasty.

100_0527.jpg

100_0524.jpg

This is from the bolt holes from where the kicker motor mount was mounted. And the PO had tried to seal it but it was with silicon and really does not seem sot have worked.

100_0526.jpg

This is looking down inside one of the corners, more tons of carp in there.

100_0523.jpg

That is where I gave up for the day, it just wore me out. I am going to clean all the corrosion up tomorrow I am hoping, if I don't have a ton of honey do things to do. This really is turning into more of a chore than what I thought it would that is for sure.

I hear eagerness in your words. You sound like you finally got that thing under controll. Lots of holes in the transom but in fairly good shape . You will be able to copy and replace it with a new one.

That's probably the nicest original transom we've seen! They sure are a bear to get out. You'll appreciate having that intact of a template. Not sure if it was this thread or another so forgive me if I'm repeating myself but Tim Fives coated the inside of his transom skin with POR15 and it seemed to work really really well.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Hey thanks guys, yea it really was a PITA. I was really starting to wonder if it was going to come out at all after I started using the bottle jack and it was still not moving. Yea I remember the pain you had doing that Jason and was hoping that mine was not going to be that way, but oh well it is done now:D.

Hey Ez, is this the stuff that Tim used? http://www.por15.com/POR-15/productinfo/1GB/ I remember you mentioning him using it in a thread somewhere but not sure where it was either buddy. I don't think that I would need that much to do just the transom skin either.

I don't know, probably. I know it's black and real expensive. My father in law also used it on a mower deck. It's tough as nails.

Nice progress Kelly, you've got to feel good looking at that transom outside the rig:)

Hopefully that corrosion will clean right up, you can tell it has been on the west coast in humidity, probably saltwater too from the look of it.

Don't worry about the lack of help from others, it's par for the course for most of us. Your family will get to enjoy all your hard work once you're done;)

Yah man, plus we are here to cheer ya on and give ya a hand when ya need it! Heck, I was just sitting around watching my soaps. I would have been happy to lend a hand yanking that transom out buddy! I'm not very smart but just hit me with a pm next time you need some heavy lifting done, eh;)
