Re: Well I did it now!

So, time for some more opinions from the mob if you would please. I am thinking of buying some saddle tanks for the boat, these ones http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/boa/2350947169.html as a matter of fact. $75 a piece is not bad for aluminum 20 gallon tanks I don't think. Just not sure how I would mount them but I am sure that with the help of you fellers that it could get done. So let me know what ya think.

Re: Well I did it now!

Agree with EZ, sweet setup and an ok price!

I will say that eyeballing those tanks, they might just be a little wide at the bottom to sit on the deck and still fit behind your side panels. Maybe.

I'd say you might have two options if that is in fact the case.

1. You could build some sort of platform to lift them up off the deck so they will fit behind the side panel. Of course this would only work if the are short enough to be lifted up and still stay under the shelf.

or

2. You could build your seat boxes to accommodate them.

Some quick measurements would settle that for ya.

It would be sweet if they worked!

Dang dude, you really need to stay the heck out of my head as I was thinking the very same thing. I have not contacted the guy yet as I am working but this is my Friday. With 12 hour shifts it does not leave a lot of time to be able to drive for about an hour or so each way to either buy them or just check them out. I have an email to the guy though and hoping that I can get some measurements of the tanks. I think that I can get them up under the sides though, just have to see.

The shelf that the side panels mount to are riveted in place and was thinking that I could even go that route if I have to. Make some brackets that it will sit on and then some side brackets that I can add a strap to and it would be good to go. Would line the brackets and strap with something like wet suit material so that they would not wear into the tank and also to keep the noise down from them. Figure that I would mount them around the position of the helm station to help keep weight forward.

Can also add a line to each tank so that they can level each other out and not cause the boat to list if one is full and the other is not. I would put a valve in this line so that it would not be on all the time, for some reason that just kind of bothers me if it was open all the time.

Re: Well I did it now!

Hi Kelly since your asking You might want to consider using JB-Weld for your patches that you don?t want to rivet down. Or failing that you may want to consider making your deck removable so that if your hull repairs can be redone should you develop leaks. I?m not sure if you can find any product that can stick to aluminum over time and that?s why I suggest both patches with rivets or a removable deck for inspection and repairs. I have chased leaks on more that one boat for years and so far I can only tell you what has worked on my boat. To be clear we are talking about corrosion on the inside of the hull and not pin holes that have made it through the hull right?

I?m not a fan of saddle tanks unless you have trim tabs to keep the boat from listing when on plane. The deep v is tipsy at the best of times. Personally I would much prefer under deck tank or one in the bow. I have two tanks under the rear seats and play the game of switching back and forth depending on conditions and how many people are in the boat. I have trim tabs so I can adjust but I would like to move the tanks forward as my boat drags it butt on troll. If you don?t mind switching tanks I do like the idea of putting tanks forward that?s for sure. Make sure the tanks, you are looking at, have no evidence of corrosion from the poor fuel we get now a days.

Dang I feel like I am a killjoy for you but I really want you to succeed. In fact if we were neighbors I would be over there with my tools helping you do your repairs. Nothing more fun then messing with boats.

Yah side saddles are cool, but if you can hold off for the right deal, I'd be with GLG. Belly tank(s) should provide you with quite a bit more stability.

Yes we are talking about corrosion on the inside that has not made its way through the hull yet. I just wanted to stop it from going any further. I understand what you are saying about the rivets as well, just scares me to be drilling holes in the bottom of my boat:eek:. I do think that I could do everything right but just nervous about it is all. Not sure how I would make it a removable deck though, would have to think that one through.

Oh I plan on checking them out probably tomorrow. I really want a belly tank but they are just not showing up around here and new ones are like way way spendy. I have checked into them and they are ranging $350 and up. Just really did not want to spend that kind of money is all.

Dang I feel like I am a killjoy for you but I really want you to succeed. In fact if we were neighbors I would be over there with my tools helping you do your repairs. Nothing more fun then messing with boats.

I wish that you were my neighbor as well, then I would have someone that could point out my screw up before they are to far along. And also someone that I could actually do some fishing with as well. I have been enjoying doing the boat when I have been able to, now that the weather is starting to turn maybe I can get something done. It is going to get filled with water tomorrow to test for leaks. Taking it to a neighbors house where the driveway is level.

Yea I agree with you and GLG on the belly tanks but I want to start getting things done and have not been able to find one. At least not for a good price, did find one but the guy wanted new price for a well used tank and he would not budge.

Yea just what I am looking for and it is a 2 hour drive from home and there is no freaking way I can go there today:facepalm:. Would someone like to come over and just shoot me and put me out of my misery:eek:. Man I am chomping to call the guy but not allowed to unless it is an emergency:( Man work really screws things up sometimes.

There was a bow tank in the glasser that I chopped up, but it is to big for mine. Might have to see what I can do to cure that now though. Just not sure it will fit with what structure needs to go back in there.

I wonder if you can creatively mount that in the very bow (hatch area)? Seems like it might fit? Is that a plastic tank or what?

Yea I was thinking up front but I think it may take up to much room up there, not sure. Going to set it in tomorrow and see how it does. It is an aluminum tank, and the sending unit even works. Well it did till I cut the wires when I tore the boat apart:D. As you can see in the pic that thing is pretty freaking big, seems very wide at the back. I did measure it but for the life of me I cannot remember how wide though.

Re: Well I did it now! 76 Islander rebuild

Re: Well I did it now! 76 Islander rebuild

Kelly I just went under my boat to check on my temporary repairs to my hull. Since I got her a few years ago, I have been fixing leaks till I redo the floor. I have corrosion from where the old bunks touched the hull. Yea the joys of a salt water boat. My new trailer bunks fit on the other side of the strake now so it?s possible to keep an eye on all the repairs. Anyhow I have JB-Weld (epoxy) on some of the small spots and a patch with rivets and epoxy on my bad spot. I did this repair a few years ago and it still looks great. The spots that I filled with the epoxy are holding up as well. I can tell as I painted the repair spots thinking that if something fell off I would see it easily. When I did my repairs I took SS wire wheel and my portable drill to clean her up before adding epoxy. I used a flexible scrapper and smoothed it on. Paint after it cured and when she dried, I went fishing. I?m glad to report that the boat is dry, well almost, maybe a cup or two (dang those old rivets) and the fish like it too. So long story short cleanup best you can and hit it with epoxy and move on to the next step. If the corrosion is through the hull put a patch and rivets or no rivets, your call. If you don?t rivet the thing, worse case scenario is you will have to put a patch and rivets on the outside. That isn?t a big deal either; after all it?s a fishing boat. You can test your repairs before you put the floor down by tapping it with a hammer. If it holds up you should be comfortable out in the chuck. My friends say I?m hard on equipment and so far the temporary repairs are holding up well and yours will too. If you?re up this way you?re welcome to stop by for some fishing. Oh and by the by nice tank looks like a winner to me.

Just thought I would take another look at the pictures you posted to see how bad the corrosion was.

It?s hard to tell from a picture but if you do just a skim coat with epoxy just make sure that it bonds before you put down your floor. Now back to hockey.:)

By the time I could get to where I could call they were not there, I think that it is a boat salvage yard and have hours. I am going to call them here in just a bit and see what they have to say. I am going to see what it would cost to ship if I don't go look at it, it is a 2 hour drive one way. So it would be a lot cheaper I think to have it shipped versus driving the superduty there to look at it.

Re: Well I did it now!

Well finally got ahold of the gentleman with the belly tank and I cannot get there in time. He has a funeral and has to leave at noon and that would only give me an hour and there is no way I can get there in an hour as it is almost a 2 hour drive there one way. I am going to go and get it tomorrow morning. He might even have some other stuff that I want.

Does anyone know a good place to get a new hatch? I know that they sell them here on iboats but dang they are spendy. So someplace that might have them a bit cheaper would be really nice.

X2, I looked pretty hard, and gls/eBay was about as good as it gets.

Diesel fuel is $$$, have ya at least attempted that tank you pulled out of the glasser yet? I'm not quite ready to give up on that big triangle tank. Free is sooooo good:)
