Re: Well I did it now!

Well got tired of trying to get my friend to let me come over with the Islander and fill it full of water on his level yard. And since my new neighbor works with the wife, got permission from her to park in front of her house and fill it full of water:). Started at 2:00 and this was after 10 min.
100_0391.jpg

I thought cool, this won't take to long. Well at 3:30 this is what I finally had.
100_0395.jpg

I find I have roughly 20 rivets that are leaking. Almost all of them are on the ends of the ribs at the outside of the hull. There are a couple that have silicon on them and I am going to reseat them or replace them, just depends on how they are when I get the silicon off of them and reseat them.

Then it takes almost 2 hours to drain the flipping thing. When I pulled the plug I thought for sure it would not take long to drain, yea right.

No Jason I have not tried to put that tank in just yet, I was going to today but was fighting against the weather once again and had to get the boat covered back up before it started pouring here again. I am going to give it a try tomorrow after I go get the belly tank. Yes I am going to get it anyway. And if the glasser tank fits then I will have more fuel capacity, and if not then will sell it.

Yes diesel is spendy, but when that is what you have then you use it. This truck does not get drove that much, maybe a half a tank a month. But what I did not tell you is that even thought it is a crew cab long bed 4x4 it still gets 22-24 gal per mile on the freeway when empty:D.

And yes I know that mileage sounds like BS but it is true. I have 2 friends in Boise that have the same truck as I do, and I mean the same except for colors. And the best that either of them get is 18-19 mpg. Don't know why I get that high but I am not complaining.

Very nice. Looks like you got the water level right up to where you'd want it to really check for leaks. I'm surprised you found so many. If you fix when you've found and then Gluvit, it'll be dryer than a new glasser! Nice transom caps. I had to order one from him myself as I lost one the end of last season. Unfortunately I wasted a few buck on one from NB first that didn't even sorta fit.

Re: Well I did it now!

I know you are paying probably a buck more per gallon for diesel but you are getting just about double the mpg than my Burb, oh the pain:facepalm:

Your fuel tank plan is a good one, that would be cool if they could both work for ya:)

Well Ez, I was not surprised after all the other stuff I have ran into. Like a good serviced outdrive and what not. Well it took a freaking hammer and pry bars to get that outdrive off. I was actually expecting to have more leak than what I did, so not going to complain about it. It is a 67 and the boat has not had an easy life just from looking at it. Yea fix and gluvit and then do it all over again.

Well Jason I will throw some more facts about this truck that will get ya thinking even more. Not only a long bed crew cad 4x4, it is an F350(1 ton), it has a 2 1/2" leveling kit on it and I am running 36" Toyo mud terrain tires, a mild chip and my milage has never changed since I got the truck and it was stock. I do think that it will struggle to pull the Islander though:D.

Your fuel tank plan is a good one, that would be cool if they could both work for ya:)

Yea that is what I was thinking. I just found this last night after posting on here http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/boa/2365194808.html. Not so sure I would want one that big though.

Re: Well I did it now!

Well made the hour and half drive to check out the tank. It is dirty but looks ok, sooooooo it is now in the driveway behind the Islander. $50 not bad for a 25 gal aluminum tank, just need to check the sender to see if it is working. And need to pressure wash the nasty thing, will have to add some pics when I get back outside, it is kind of carpy out right now.

Stopped by the lumber yard on way home from getting the tank and I now have 3 sheets of 3/4" marine grade plywood. This is for the transom and somehow I ordered to many sheets of 3/4" so I have an extra now. I am going to order 4 sheet of 1/2" marine grade, well actually already did it. The wife says just do it right and get the marine grade and made the order for me. So yea I have it on order and it will be here next week. But I am not paying the prices you guys back there are paying either, my 3/4' was $61 and the 1/2" is $50 a sheet.

Next I need to get to HD and check out paint and foam insulation. I am hoping that the HD or Lowes will carry the right rusto that I want to get. I am also ordering the epoxy this weekend so that it is on the way.

So a question once again. The guy that I bought the tank from asked about my boat and I told him. And he said to use the epoxy on the corroded parts of the hull that it would work fine. I am thinking that this would not be a good idea, am I right? The reason that I really questioning his idea is that he also told me to make sure to degrease the area real good and that brake fluid would work good. Degreasing with brake fluid? For real, have never heard of anything like that before.

I'd stick with the plan you have for your hull there buddy, it's a good one.

Degrease with brake fluid? Huh, I dunno about that one. I'd just degrease with some sort of degreaser myself.

$61 for MG 3/4" is a super deal!

I've heard of using brake fluid to remove paint but not to degrease. I'm trying it now.

Hope those caps work out for ya!

Gonna post up pics of the belly tank?

Re: Well I did it now!

Sorry that I did not get pics posted last night but was not feeling to hot, blood sugar spiked and that is not good for a diabetic.

But here is a pic of when I got it home. As you can see there is a lot of crud built up on the top and the bottom is 10 times worse.
100_0398.jpg

Here is the top all cleaned up and looking pretty.
100_0403.jpg

Here is the bottom all pressure washed. There is some corrosion here that I could not really see when I bought the tank cause it was so dirty.
100_0404.jpg

Well me being me, I decide to take my die grinder with SS wire wheel and clean it up a bit.
100_0405.jpg

Man things just don't seem to be going my way. More pics coming.

Well I was cleaning it up and see a little dark spot in the corner and was wondering how come the stuff did not come off with 2400 psi pressure washer.
100_0406-1.jpg

Well got to probing the area with a small screw driver.
100_0407.jpg

And see what happens to screw driver.

Here is a dime to give you an idea of how big the hole is.

Another pic of the area where the hole is.

Ace Hardware is where I wound up purchasing my gallons of Rusto because they had colors that Lowes and HD did not in stock.

Clean metal primer quarts are cheaper at Lowes than Ace and HD though.

Hey there MichaelP, you still looking for a gas tank:D?

Anyway, is it fesiadle to repair this or is this just a stupid question? Or did I just obtain $10 worth of scrap for $50?

Sorry Kelley not funny . When we try to do things sometime a bargin is NOT. Yes a decent welder could repair if the tank will fit I would ask one for a estimaate. Cost might scare the h-- out of you tho. The rest will be better . Pugetsound

Re: Well I did it now!

I would not even consider using that tank unless it was some kind of above deck situation where I could easily replace it when it failed. Not to mention how gunked up it is inside. Sorry that didn't work out for you. I bought a tank for my project also that I didn't end up using. And sold it for less than I paid for it.

Re: Well I did it now!

Thanks for thinking of me Kelly but I'll pass on this one..Sorry bro. I can certainly weld that hole but there is no telling where or when the next weak spot will break through. You might look into cutting the whole bottom off and having a new one welded on. I'll stick with my plan of making my own unless something falls on my lap. I have plenty of time. liking the idea of putting the connections exactly where I want them.

Re: Well I did it now!

20 leaky rivets is not bad at all for such a huge, older hull. You will be in good shape after re-bucking or replacing and gluvit.:)

Great progress, I was bummed to see that tank all pitted out, even aluminum can't handle 40 years of neglect.

Re: Well I did it now!

Re: Well I did it now!

There is only one way I would even think of using it now, that would be to cut the entire bottom out and weld a new one in. The only problem with that is that I don't know how to weld and don't know anyone who does either. So I am thinking that it is scrap now:(, oh well. At least it was not a ton of money and I am not counting the fuel to go there cause we have never been there and it was an enjoyable drive for the wife, Jack and myself.

You sure about the tank Mike? I tell ya man it is cheap:D.

Re: Well I did it now!

Re: Well I did it now!

Well on to the rivet section now. I found a few of the leaking rivets has some red silicon or such on them and so took die grinder with ss wire wheel and cleaned them off. After cleaning them off, one of the side ones really stoof out. No freaking head on the rivet.
100_0433.jpg

I also found one that was almost in the middle of the hull, it was not leaking when I checked them but it did have the red silicon on it. I cleaned it off as well and really did not like the looks of it after words. There is now a hole in the hull where that silicon used to be, just the head was missing. I drilled the rest of the rivet out and now have to order my solid rivets.
100_0432.jpg

As you can see, the hull is corroded around the rivet. So I am wondering what I can do to fix this now. Am worried that if I replaced the rivet that it may just pull through the hull. Was thinking maybe a washer of some kind but not sure there. Thinking a washer would also cause water to be forced up that direction and kind of help in creating a leak.
