Re: Well I did it now!

Looks like scrap to me. Know anyone that will TIG for you...lol
Yuppers I agree Veil and no I don't know anyone who TIG's.

Sorry Kelly not funny . When we try to do things sometime a bargin is NOT. Yes a decent welder could repair if the tank will fit I would ask one for a estimaate. Cost might scare the h-- out of you tho. The rest will be better . Pugetsound
Oh I know that it will scare the H--- out of me to have some one tig it up, I know that stuff is not cheap to do.

I would not even consider using that tank unless it was some kind of above deck situation where I could easily replace it when it failed. Not to mention how gunked up it is inside. Sorry that didn't work out for you. I bought a tank for my project also that I didn't end up using. And sold it for less than I paid for it.
Na Ez, not going to use it bud. Just to much crap in there and unless I cut the bottom off there is no way to clean it. I think that it would probably be cheaper in the long run to have one made up.

Thanks for thinking of me Kelly but I'll pass on this one..Sorry bro. I can certainly weld that hole but there is no telling where or when the next weak spot will break through. You might look into cutting the whole bottom off and having a new one welded on. I'll stick with my plan of making my own unless something falls on my lap. I have plenty of time. liking the idea of putting the connections exactly where I want them.
Yea I would make one myself if I was capable. Not going to happen though.

20 leaky rivets is not bad at all for such a huge, older hull. You will be in good shape after re-bucking or replacing and gluvit.:)

Great progress, I was bummed to see that tank all pitted out, even aluminum can't handle 40 years of neglect.
Yea I was not to surprised to find that few of leaks in that old of a boat Huron. And they were all on the outside edge except for one that I have already posted. I will get them all fixed and then gluvit the inside so no more leaks I hope. As for that tank, I have no idea how old it is and yea it is a bummer.

----------------------------------------------------------

I had no idea how bad the pitting was on the tank or I would never have taken it. The bottom had a bunch of oily crud on it and I could see some pitting but it really did not look that bad. You can be I won't make a mistake like that one again, tools go with me for anything else that I need to check out.

I make a little progress every week even if it does not loook like it. Just trying to get everything in order and on hand for when things really start to happen. It is just a blow to me when things like this happen. The wife is really good about it though, she said that it was not big deal and we will find what we need when the time is right. I knew there was a reason that I keep her around:D.

Thanks for checking on me guys and keeping me going in a fairly straight line.

Re: Well I did it now!

Hi Kelly, sorry to hear about your tank. Sometimes things don?t work out no matter how much care you take. Hope something comes along or the other tank you have fits somehow. As for that rivet with all the corrosion around it, I?m not sure what you can do with that one except maybe JB-Weld. If you end up using a washer to help strengthen the area you can find aluminum washers that are made for rivets at Home Depot. They are next to the pop rivets. They are used when the hole has been oversized from wear and they might do the trick. Don?t use stainless steel washer as that will corrode and you will be back to square one.

So on that rivet that has corrosion around it. I was thinking that maybe if I removed the rivet and then filled it all in with JB weld and then redrilled the hole and put in new rivet with a washer. So any yay's or nay's on this? Or anyone have any better idea I am all ears guys, just trying to think of something to do with it.

Your plan sounds fine. I was just gonna say to put an SS bolt and washer in there. I don't think it would corrode. There's SS fasteners all over these things from the factory.

Re: Well I did it now!

Great work, KellyC. I'm about to be ankle deep in Starcraft resto too (67' Starchief), and the relative speed and apparent efficiency of your project brings me much needed fortitude.
But hey, at least you got a few springers this season! Many trips for me with NADA. I'm just down the road in Portland. Hope to spot you in a hogline this Summer or Fall! I'm in a (currently) red Starchief, though I hope to repaint her soon. Problem is, she works great as is (only a couple caveats). Hard to take a willing boat off the water.
Keep it up!

Well don't be watching me to much pxlxr as I am going way slow and have a whole bunch to do bud, but thanks all the same. Yea it was nice to get the springers and I only went out twice, so I was lucky. Your starchief is the same year as my islander, way cool. yea we will have to get together one day. And if you need any help then give a holler and I will see what I can do. Am no expert by any means and just go by the help that I get here on iboat, great place with a great bunch of guys.

Hi Kelly, I think your plan will work and you could use a SS washer as long as you coat the washer with JB-Weld. The idea is to separate the SS from the aluminum so you don?t get corrosion. You could also make your own aluminum washer with some of the thin scarp you have. Cut out a round piece and drill a hole in the center. Slap some JB-Weld on her and rivet away. For others reading this and wondering why not just use SS on thing, the problem is where Kelly and I live. The aluminum will turn to powder in a few years if you don?t separate them. I have pulled many SS bolts off my tub and repaired the holes because of the contact between the two metals. Not a big deal, if you have access but on the bottom of the hull, that?s the problem.

That, my friend, is a scam. STAY AWAY! At some point, they will try to extract money from you. Craigslist is a CASH ONLY world, anything else, and you're looking at trouble.

Ok, thanks on that GLG, just was not sure what to do. I do have some thin aluminum pieces that I can make some washers out of. I will just cut some out and JB them into place and let it set up and then put in the rivets. Man that really helps a lot.

That is exactly what I was thinking pxlxr, and I had a bad feeling about it as well. I think someone (fish?) had something similar about buying his boat.

Thanks guys.

Re: Well I did it now!

Ok, I am throwing a monkey in the wrench works here. Just got off the phone with Steve at USComposites about thier epoxy. I was wanting ask some questions about the epoxy and temps that we have around here. I told him that I wanted to use it to seal the plywood before installing in the boat and he asked if I was using a certain mat or what cause that would depend on the cure time and application time as well. Told him no mat and he said that he would advise against doing this as it may crack and delaminate even with several layers on it. He said that the mat would give it the flexability that it would need without cracking. So now I am asking my fellow Starmada members how come just epoxy is used to seal decking when the maker of said epoxy advises against it? Just have to ask as this guy should know what the heck his product does. I am not doubing anyone here, just asking questions just like I always do.

Re: Well I did it now!

I have a half dozen emails like that in my spam box at any point in the day.

My deck has worked great so far! No mat or anything!

Oh, nevermind:facepalm:

Well, I'd say that somebody would have piped up by now if there was massive deck failure. Seems like just about everybody runs it that way.

Re: Well I did it now!

Ok, have talked to both USComposites and ClarkCraft today about epoxy and both say that they would not apply epoxy under 70 degrees:(. They both say that the epoxy will not absorb into the wood the way it should if it is not warm enough. So now trying to figure out how to make something warm without ticking off landlords. They do not want me to install a heater in the garage and I would really like to get going on the deck just a little if I can:facepalm:.

Ok, I am just full of questions (or something) today. Has anyone ever used this http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|328|49758|1405168&id=1405061 ? That looks like something that would be cool with our aluminum boats and running wires and what not. It looks a lot better than just using sticky back zip tie bases, those don't stick for beans. We use them at work and everyone hates them, they come off to easy or do not come off when you need them to.

Hi Kelly, I use the zip ties with the tab and holes in them. The type that are made to have a screw in them to attach to something. If you reach under your gunnels you will find some tails of long bolts. They can be slipped on to those bolts and if you like you can put a nut on them and they will stay in place. The previous owner rewired my boat and so far nothing has broke down. Nock on wood. As for those cheap sticky things, they never seem to stick very well. Wonder if you could put JB-Weld on them and see if that sticks. LOL.

I think that I have found a fan of JB Weld:D. Yea I was kind of thinking the same way there GLG and do like yours is done. I just don't want to add anything that is going to poke more holes in my hull.

Hey Kelly, for making your aluminum washers, just use an 1"or 1&1/4" hole saw. It makes them real nice.
