Man those bow caps are trouble! You should haul your rig up to lakelover's place and cuss, spit, and kick the dirt together till they come off. You guys are both living the dream. I think he is just around the corner from ya.

Kelly, I just took the bow cap off the 79 18SS. A flat screw driver between the cap and the rub rail on both sides, tap lightly till the notchs are above the rail then tap the cap off with a block of wood and a small hammer. Worked good for me. I was going to ask on here how to remove the glue and you answered that question for me.

I will have to give that a try this weekend Glen, maybe it will work without breaking the dang thing. Yea the glue actually comes off pretty easy with the MEK, just lots of rubbing with the MEK soaked rags.

Kelly Dozer is spot on with the proceedure for the bow cap. And there's a tiny chunk of the top tab missing on the one I have on the LL :) If you break yours I'll send u a replacement for shipping cost only!

Way cool for the additional info NB and I may have to take you up on that offer. It kind of made me a little angry and when things like that make me upset something usually gets broken:(. Ah well, I am going to go at it again on Thursday as that is my first day off this week. This is a long week for me (4 days) and I really hate the long weeks for some reason.

You have to pry the top (one side at a time) flange and smack it sideways with a rubber mallet, Get it to move a little and then do the other side -back and forth.

Kelly - If your still interested in a tank here a link for you to check out. I already emailed him with what I'm looking for but he claims to have 10 aluminum tanks he pretty much just wants gone. Real bottom feeder opportunity here! PostingID: 2315872799

Hello kelly. I have just read your entire thread, and I would like to chime in on a question you had earlier. You said someone told you to degrease with brake fluid. Do not do this. What he was telling you was to use brake cleaner. Brake fluid is a mineral based hydraulic oil, that will leave a film that will blister your paint and cause it to separate as you apply it. You can also use de-natured alcohol, which is really the same thing as brake cleaner, but you apply it with a rag instead of an aerosol can. Both of these can be purchased from any auto parts store very cheaply. You may be able to pick it up at wal-mart as well in the automotive or paint department. Usually the de-natured alcohol is cheaper because there is no aerosol, and you can buy it by the quart or by the gallon. Both of these will completely eliminate any oil or grease residue from any surface without damage, and it dries very quickly so you can paint. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Thanks NB, I am going to give it a shot next weekend. Did not get a lot done this weekend with it as I was kind of busy having to do some other things.

Thanks for the links Mike, but I do have another tank already and it was fairly cheap as well. And the good thing is that it is clean inside and there are no holes in it that are not supposed to be there:D.

Hello rpontius and welcome to iboats. Thanks for the info bud on the break cleaner. I was wondering when that guy told me to use break fluid to clean things with if he was smoking crack:eek:. I had no intention of using it, was just posting on here to see what people had to say about it is all.

Re: Well I did it now!

Re: Well I did it now!

Well I finally got some time to work on the Islander this last weekend and made a bit of progress with it. I do have a few pics but forgot the camera when I left for work this morning so I will have to upload them tonight when I get home if I remember.

I was able to get the glovit laid down and that took longer than I thought it would. I thought well just this little can and I have 90 min pot life, I should be done in plenty of time so I mixed the whole can up. Won't be doing that again, it took over an hour to get the glovit down and it was starting to kick good when I finally finished it. The one can did the whole boat with one coat with just a little bit left over. I have another can left and was wondering if I should do a second coat of glovit or not. Anyone have any suggestions on this?

I also stripped the transom and right side of boat down to the water line of paint. I now have a partially naked boat, hopefully I can get the other side stripped down this next weekend. I sure thought that stripping the boat would go faster than it did as well. Put stripper on and wait the 15 min and then go at it with sctochbrite scrubbers, wow is that ever a PITA. Not used to doing a lot of manula labor anymore and it is showing in the aches and pains:facepalm:.

The wife and I also went and did some shopping and brought home some paint:D. We have 3 colors, white, blue and yellow. I kind of let her pick the colors so that she would feel more helpful with the boat as she feels that she has not been doing a lot with it. Although she helped me strip what we did get done. So I took one of my old pics of the boat and picked the colors that best matched what I had and did this.

So what do you guys think of it? I really like the yellow on it. Orginally I was going to do the blue for the biggets part of the boat but got that yellow and I think it looks better this way. I am going to paint the whole upper section white then the blue stripe and yellow below with bare aluminum for the bottom.

Not yer sure how I am going to get the paint off of the bottom yet:confused:. Don't really like the idea of using the stripper and then having to crawl under her to scrub it off along with the paint.

After I am able to finally float her I will have to deal with that ugly green trailer as well, but that is down the road some.

I was also wondering where you guys were getting your carpet at? I am thinking of doing carpet for the side panels instead of using vinyl, thought it would look good and not as easy to tear since I am going to be having my horse of a dog with me a lot of the time as well. So carpet would be best I think, and also what glue were you using? I know Ez had some links but I am not looking in the right spot for them I guess as I cannot seem to find them. Thanks guys, you are all an inspiration to me to get this boat done but done right. I think Jason is doing a super job on his and have been following it closely.

Mellow Yellow right on . if the bottom is to be painted just for looks leave it ,as in the water no one sees it anyway and not much showing even on the trailer. If it ain't broke dont fix it. Nice job so far.

Re: Well I did it now!

Well I said I would get pics up and here are a few. This is the bow with the stripper on it and ready to be cleaned off.

100_0453.jpg

Well this is what she looks like with almost all the lower paint off except for the very bottom.

100_0452.jpg

Here is the transom all stripped of paint and then a little patch to see how the colors look on the boat. Not in the order they are going to go on now, but that is how we were thinking of painting it. Just did not match up right looking at the patch.

100_0451.jpg

And I will say that paint stripper is real good way of messing up your nice and cool L.E.D trailer lights. I forgot to cover up this and a marker light on the same side.

100_0454.jpg

And here is my #1 helper and fan, Terri is awesome and said that she actually enjoys helping with the boat.

Almost forgot, I was finally able to get my bow cap off without breaking it. Thanks for all the advice with all of this guys, man I don't know what I would do without all the help everyone offers here.

Thank you for the link Ez, it is very appreciated. Did you use it on your side panels and if so did you glue it down or staple it?

I used it on the bow deck, side panels, and stern deck. I used their Roberts 6700 adhesive which works awesome. Just be careful not to glob too much on because it will come up through the carpet. Use a notched trowel to spread it and you should be ok.

I really like the colors.

Sorry buddy but those colors aren't for me. Not a fan of yellow. But what really matters is how you like it. I think that all fresh paint jobs look good tho. Just being honest.

Your ahead of me on the stripping and it's looking very good from here. I'm thinking about flipping mine onto bales of hay so the roof clears the ground. If I can scrounge up some wheels I might even make a small inverted Starcraft hauler that I can move around with the tractor. If you don't want to flip it then maybe dump it on the grass and prop up one side at a time.

Re: Well I did it now! 67 Islander Rebuild

Hey Mike, glad you chimed in buddy. Not every color is for everyone, and you never know I might change my mind when it actually comes to painting this thing. I have always liked the yellow river boats for some reason, if I was to buy a new one there is a really good change that it would be yellow.

Well the wife and I were hard at it all day on Saturday and that is how it got so far. You are doing good my friend, don't be fooling yourself. I would love to just drag it off the trailer, just not sure how I would do it is all. I pretty much would have to do it myself or maybe with the wifes help. But other than that I don't really have to many options as far as help goes. Wish I had something like a backhoe that I could just use some straps and lift her off the trialer and then lay her on her side to finish up the stripping.

Kelly those colors go well together, just like University of Michigan's maize and blue. I'm a MSU grad myself though:D

What brand of paint is that?

That shade of yellow is about perfect for what the stripe on my SS should be. Like a Goldenrod or Sunset yellow, that's what Roslynn calls it anyway.:)

Looks like paint removal is going well. I still need to read up on your thread. I'm never in the Starcraft section it seems...

The colors go together, but I'm a big MSU fan like Huron so maybe try green and white? ;) It is your boat though and it should fit it nicely! :D Keep up the great work!
