68/67Chris Crafts Cavaliers

Hi I purchased 2 Chris Cavaliers in what seems to be in good shape both boats where in the water in 2007 and where winterized then as I am new to boating what do I need to do when the spring comes and what should I look for ?

Found them in a Boat trade magazine in Northern Ontario where I live. They had four boats and unfortanatly the husbanded passed a way. So the son took one...the wife kept the bigger on 38' I believe and had the two left over. She was trying to sell them seperatly but was having a hard time moving them. After going to see them I ask if there was a deal if I bought them both she agreed and 7900.00 later I know have 2 wonderful boats.

I have taken some pictures of my boat and am wondering if you can tell me anything about what these are? This is my first time owning a big boat and am not to sure what I am looking at. Since they are older boats I have not got a manual for them as of yet so just trying to learn what I can at this time. I do know the last picture is of the motor, 327 210hp any other information on it would be great.

Without a bit more information I'll have to do some guess work on a couple of things here. On the fist picture, I believe the blue 'thing' in the backround is your cast iron muffler for the engine. I don't know what that coil is for. At first I was going to guess it might be an old refrigerator coil that has been installed in the engine compartment and maybe tied into the engine cooling system to warm & keep dry the engine compartment, but that doesn't make much sense as you have that 500lb hot engine to do that, so I don't know what it is, other than not original. The second picture (as has been said) is the potable hot water heater. In this case it is a good quality one as it will heat the potable water by electricity when tied up at at a pier & the boat is plugged into shore-side electricity, and it also has an extra coil running though it that is tied into the engine cooling system so that the engine cooling water heats the potable water when the engine is running (or at least this is the case if there are four hoses attached to the unit (I can see three of them). Two hoses should tie into the enging cooling, and two tie into the potable water system.) The third picture, of the PAR pump, should be your potable water pump for the head and galley sinks. The last picture, of the engine, would most likely be the original engine (keep it that way). This is a Chevy (GM) 327 CID block that C.C. rates at 210 HP.. That Chris Craft conversion is a very good engine and it would be well worth putting some money into if you need to. Can't tell much by these pictures, but by the little bit that can be seen it looks like maybe you did pretty well, things look pretty good.

Thank you for the answers....The water pump I persume there should be a water tank that I fill or do I fill the silver box? Another question is the gas tank (only one large tank) has a desiel cap on it but I am guessing that is a replacement cap and tank as it is a single one. It is large metal and sits infront of the water pump Ie picture 2. I thought the first picture was a fridge grill when I looked at it. So no idea what it is for or how it would be tied in.

The transmission is a Paragon. The drain plug is on the lower starboard side. The dipstick is also a vent and is located on the top of the transmission portside just aft of the shift linkage. There is a cylindrical cooler for the tranny and has both fluid and a dedicated cooling water hose from the raw water pump.

The thermostat is located in front of the carb on the top of the engine. The circular housing with two hex-head bolts.

The distributor is a Mallory with a flat cap, sometimes called a crab cap.

The raw water pump, usually Sherwood brand, is located facing the engine on the lower starboard side and will have a disposable rubber impeller.

The circulating water pump is located front upper center of the engine with two hoses. It's all bronze parts.

The black cable under and aft of the distrbutor with the metal attaching screw cap is the tachometer drive.

As for that coil by the muffler, if you have an electric refridgerator then you are probably correct that the coil is for that ( I was thnking ice box & not electric fridge on this boat). You will have two tanks, the fuel (gas) tank and a water tank (not the silver box). The gas tank will be in the engine compartment. The water tank may be there also, or may be up in the cabin area (under the dinette or someplace else - I don't know where C.C. put them on the Cavaliers). The easiest way to find it may be to look for the deck fill (where you put the garden hose to fill the tank) and follow that to the tank. Just make sure you know which tank is which before you put fuel or water aboard. :)
I would think that being a lake boat, this would be a raw water cooled engine. If so you have only one water pump on the engine (lower right side under the exhaust manifold).
 
Top
