Well, after redoing the lower, it does run, but rough.....
What is a good # for compression?
How to set the lean/rich mixture screw?​

OK, Haut, are you talking about running on a boat? If so, does it run better with the hood off? If so, did you put the seal back on top of the water pump housing? It won't run worth a hoot with the hood on if you leave that out. You wouldn't be the first one.

There are other reasons but that is #1, especially since you've had it apart. #2 would be a torn shift rod boot.

Actually I repaired a bad connection in the tank fuel line, & it runs much better....
It will idle & shift just fine.....
I still have not done a compression test, because it just started to pour here.....
It will idle & rev, but I did notice that it sticks going from 'start' position to wot position.....
I can see where a screw on the linkage is just hitting another screw, but will get past it with a little force, or if I push slightly with a pencil....
They barely touch, but enough to impede smooth throttle.....
It seems to run the same with the cover off or on....
I've been running it attached to my boat, with a tub fed by a hose....
FR were you referring to the rubber grommet & washer that fits over the driveshaft & impeller housing?
If so, then yes, it was replaced, along with the water supply grommit......
I had it idling for at least twenty minutes & it didn't get hot.....
It does start easily.....​

Don't force the 9.5HP tiller handle much past start. That is a safety feature to keep you from over- revving the motor unless it is in forward gear. When the shift lever is in forward gear, you will have no resistance.

Bottom line is, don't ever run a two stroke past 1500 RPM with no load or you can have a runaway and throw a rod.

You are correct, it was the shift linkage in the way....

It seems to shift fine & will idle down low.....
Is there anything specific that I should do with the low idle mix or call it good as long as it will idle down?......
What are considered decent compression #'s?.......
I know the closer the better between the cylinders, but what would be a decent #?.....​

I have six 9.5 motors that I use a lot. Two have long shafts and I use them for kickers. None of them get over 80 PSI compression warm. I think if I were 20 years old again, I might get them to read 90. I think that 75-80 is OK for this motor because they all run fine and can go all day. I don't use anything but 100% synthetic TCW-3 oil in them. I do a Capt. Dunkelberger type decarb and fog them well each fall.
