Please understand this is my first restore of a boat and i am a rookie! Found a 1968 40 hp evinrude short shaft model number 40852c. It was running and idling fine in a can. My buddy pushed down on a lever up at the top by the pull rope, and it seemed to back the fuel up and the fuel line cracked from the stress. After that it would not run as good anymore. Had a local work at home mechaniac come take a look and we also found gunk in the fuel line. He said i prob need a rebuilt carb. So he did, also compression is 120 on each cylinder, and spark is good. Since this guy rebuilt the carb and rebuilt the fuel pump it would even stay idling. Next he discovered the timing key was sheared off, replaced the key and fooled around with the points, it wont run. It seems to be dumping alot of oil in the garbage can we run it in and if you keep choking it seems to wanna run but it has a lean misfire or pop he calls it. He seems to now think the gasket blew on the lower end and it sucking in air. I know the lean has been played with alot. I dont know if i should give up or try a real mechanic? I dont know if timing is set right on, and also we didnt even have all the ignition cables hooked up to a key. Just touched the white to battery. So after he said he gave up i hooked it up to original ignition swith and it fired right up and ran for a min but i had to turn it off it was not in water!!! Help please, our boston whaler is now about ready, we need this motor!!!!!! My email is hectorcarreno@comcast.net. Sorry for long post but its been a month of hell with this motor.

Re: 68 evin. 40 hp all messed up help!!!!!!

Jimmy. welcome here. 1st thing I would do is obtain a manual for this motor. Then, follow the steps described in the manual and set the timing. Then perform a "link and sync" operation. This procedure syncronises the timing advance to your throttle.

Next I would definately replace the waterpump/impellor assembly. Running the motor out of the water for 1 minute has certainly damaged the rubber vanes on the impellor. If not replaced, you WILL suffer damage through overheating.

Good luck and keep us up to date.

Re: 68 evin. 40 hp all messed up help!!!!!!

Well i got it to run today but it wont low idle? If i raise the throttle up a little it stays running but seems to misfire a little. As i raise the throttle it runs better. Its not smoking alot anymore either but the fuel pump is not delivering fuel so i have to keep pumping the bulb. Also when its running it sounds like a metal piece is ticking or maybe it is bad spark ticking? The plugs get pretty black quickly and there seems to be oil in the the bucket and its black oil like its been burned? This mechanic i think just created alot more issues! Besides that metal sounding ticking, seems to be up where the pull rope lays on top of flywheel, it roars when in full throttle and would keep running until i bring it back to low idle????? Help me!! I know i probably need fuel pump, even though we got a rebuilt kit for it, we lost that little spring the goes on a small white valve. Help me pleeeaaasss.

Well so much for that, it wont start again and it seems to be drawing alot of battery to try and turn it over and the spark plugs i put in today, one is black anfd the tip of it got bent down and the other one burned differant? I give up if anyone wants this motor come get it. I have lined up another running 40 hp evinrude and a 2nd parts one to go with it. I will be selling both of them for $300 if anyone is interested.

Re: 68 evin. 40 hp all messed up help!!!!!!

Well bottom line is i am still looking for a 40 hp short shaft that is in good running condition. I have a budget of $600 or trade my running one day and not the next 1968 40 hp short shaft evinrude plus cash. Has a rebuilt carb and fuel pump, new fuel lines and is actually a good looking motor. But id rather it not look so good and run properly! I know if someone knew what they were doing it would probably be a good runner. Has 120 comp. on both heads, good spark, i think i put fuel pump back together wrong. I had it running today and could full throttle it but no low idle and seem to misfire. Fowling out the plugs. Me and my buddy have just completed a restore on a 13 foot 1966 whaler with full conversion to a bass boat, complete with bow and stern carpeted decks and 40 thrust power glide minn kota bow mount troller. Looks so nice but no motor! We dont know much about motors so we want a ready to go motor. Location is Michigan. HELP WE WANNA GO FISHING!!!
