Had some time to strip the paint

Striping the paint

Now the question about primer and paint I have spent most of the day reading through threads, I still confused :facepalm:
I know i need to prep the AL and use an etching primmer, which one is best?

The boat will spend most of the time on the trailer so what would the easiest top paint be ?

Something that will last and not to expensive and easy to apply.

I was able to find Duplicolor's etching primer pretty reasonably at Pep-Boys. You only need a light dusting of the stuff. I'd probably go with Rusto or the Valspar tractor paint.

Rust-Oleum Automotive 12-oz. Automotive Self Etching Primer spray paint I would need at least 10 cans ?

If your boat is going to be on the trailer most of the time don't bother with the Marine Rusto. Find the Rusto Pro and got for it. It is the top qaulity Rusto and very durable.

I don't think you'd need anywhere near that many cans of primers for a light dusting.

I have about 8ft on the Port side hull paint left to strip doing on my back is not fun!!!!!!

I'll try and get in done by Friday, off to Minneapolis for work

Well Igot home early from work, the hull is stripped. Quick clean up and I'm ready for the next step :joyous:

1- Tend to rivets and dent :grumpy: (It happened years ago tie downs not secure and it has a good roller dent)
2- Vinegar/water wash
3- gluevit's
4- Sand gluevit's
5- Prime
6- Paint
7- Cut new floatation stuff
8- sand old flooring
9- Seal old flooring
10- Put rest of boat stuff back together...............

The Rusto self etching spray cans go a long way, like EZ said you don't have to put lots on. After the etching I go with a complete coat of Rusto gray primer, then a light sand with 400 and then the color.

I removed the wind shield and all fixings as well as the 2 transom end caps.
I am having difficulty removing the bow end cap drilled out the 2 rivets but it will no move what am i doing wrong?

My cap was trapped by the rub rail frame. I carefully used a thin screwdriver and putty knife to lift the rear end cap and tapped off with piece of wood and hammer. I say carefully because some guys have broken their cap since it's so tight.

BTW - I had 4 rivets in mine. All from the bottom.

Striped the paint of the bow, Gunnels and transom Just need to strip the little bits on the 2 freeboards

laid the etching primer down off to get primer tomorrow

Yes it was a great help :joyous:


It was 25 deg outside so i turned off the garage heaters and suited up face mask and respirator and sprayed away.
I was done in no time, left it dry and opened the garages door put the fan on and went for a smoke...
But I did stink the house out with fumes, thankfully we have an attic fan to suck out the fumes

Well I got the 1st coat of primer on yesterday Going to give it a light sand, wash then apply the 2nd coat today.
