i don't know much about boat motors, and i've got a 1968 johnson 20 hp w/electric start that i've used for the past 5 years. it runs great, but i just upgraded to a larger boat and the old lady wants me to sell my old one with the motor. would this motor be something that i should hang on to, or just sell it? thanks for any replies.

If I were in your shoes and would like to have a new GPS or fancy depth finder for my new boat I know how I would pay for it.

However if I had a young kid I might stick it in the back of the garage until he got to be 12 or 13 and then look for a skiff to hang it on.

Man, I woulda killed to have a 20hp when I was 12! I had my trusty ol' 7.5. Didn't get the okay to move up to anything over a 10hp 'til I was 14.

Anyway, if you're thinking of keeping it for future collector value - it's not going to happen. Simply too many of them out there to really have a high value. It's greatest value lies in it's service value. If the motor is in good shape, complete, and has been maintained well during it's 35-year tenure, then it can remain so for someone else. It looks new enough that many boaters won't be scared off by its age, and it's simple enough that anyone with basic mechanical ability can still maintain it and do basic repairs.

Hope that helps...
- Scott
