Hey all.{68 rude 55 electric shift} many of you great boating buddies have been so helpful and I appreciate those who have nudged me along with bit's of valuable info. So to this point I dropped the bottom portion of the leg and I hooked power to the neutral and the neutral/reverse wires and listened. Without taking the solinoids out of there position in the housing but I heard distinct sounds of both trying to engage {as any electromagnetic switch would when they have power to them} this is the good news, I suspect the reason not going in gear is that things are gummed up in side the gearcase, although I did run some dex 3 fluid through the gearbox before I got this far. I checked the ohms on each and one was 005 and one was 009, in other words I think I have some good solinoids. Couple of questions before I get new gaskets and put this thing back together. 1. there is quite a bit of residual oil in the chamber area specifically the center hole not sure what the center hole does, I think its exaust and the gasket for that area is shot, so I will replace in addition to the drive shaft O ring. My manual say's there are "plastic water guide tubes" but they don't look like they are plastic to me. Any ideas? 2. upon reinstallation obviously I must turn the crank to line up the drive shaft with the crankshaft splines, but is this a worm type gear or simple spline shaft? 3. should I check anything else while I have this apart?

I had an old eletric Enivrude sounds pretty much like the same year. I am not sure what type of oil you are putting in that lower unit but you def need to use ELETRIC shift oil. It is not the standard lower unit oil. Someone had used regular lower unit oil in mine as well and it would not shift while running or it would only start in gear.

The water guide tubes I belive are copper with a rubber boot I belive "its been awhile"
If you check the book it should tell you what kind of gears it has in it. I do remeber that they lined up with little trouble.

If you cant find it let me know and I can try to look it up for you.

OMC make a whole new water pump housing for the motor "i think" you might want to replace that if you are in there as well.

Hi Denny
I don't understand your first question. I am guessing your talking about the exhaust. There is a rubber gasket that seals the inner exhaust tube to the lower unit. This must be in good shape. Otherwise you will have exhaust gases and heat on your shift wires, water pump and under the bonnet. The guide tubes are plastic. Sometimes they become black or get melted. Some motors use them, some don't. They help guide the water pipe into the rubber gromet at the top of the pump housing. Sometimes they are missing, because they were destroyed and not replaced. As there are no worm gears in this unit, we're talking simple spline. The L\U is in forward all the time, so you should be able to turn the prop shaft to line up the splines. The only time the L\U is not in forward is when power is applied to the selenoids. I agree with Thornious replace the empeller. Also carefully check those shift wires for signs of wear cracking, corrosion, melting, etc. Before you install your L\U give it a presure and vac test. This will tell you right now if your ready to go or not. I sent you some more info. If there is anything else you need just ask.

Hey Thornious, thanks for the reply. I am using the type of oil recommended OMC pre 70's for electric shift {on the actual container it dosen't say 75 weight, but it doe's say for all OMC electric shifts}. On the water tubes there were no "rubber boots" so I will get some. I will check into the cost's around for an impeller although if it turns out to be 100's {like everything else on this old motor} I may just use the old one. Hey Alcan, thanks again I saw the diagram on my email that's much better than the one the manual provides. The wires were fine no sign of the jacket for them melted or cut. I will check in the manual for instructions on "presure testing" although I don't currently own a "presure gauge" I will look around and see I can pick one up cheap. Thanks again, Denny

I was able to pick that whole water pump assembly up for around 34 bucks.

I do know what you are saying about the price of everything else though. I tried to buy that solenoid wire $360.00 I said no thanks and broke out the old soldering iron.

Hey Thornious, wow I understand on the wire. I was looking at the cost of a new distributor cap the other day at our local boating store and it was a whooping $240 man just about fainted. Fortunately I did not need one. Where in the world did you get your water pump assembly for 34 dollars?, thanks again Denny

You can get a lot of the parts at any NAPA store. The water pump impeller for my '53 5 horse johnny was only $11. Enjoy that motor.

Hey Spider John, thanks I will check into that for sure. It really amazes me though it seems almost everything on this motor is expensive. Thanks again, Denny

I know this is an old post but I lost track of it. I was able to pick it at a dealer here in Pittsburgh. They ordered it for me and it took about a week to come in. It was an omc part that I know for sure. If you still need this let me know and I will look up the number for the shop
