kbait, thanks for those tips. I'll give it a shot in the recommended order. Cheers.

Re: '69 Lightwin 4hp; question on common problems/value

I'm bringing this old thread back from the dead to try and troubleshoot a problem I'm having. I finally got an obstruction out of the block (the old gasket for the water pipe, I think), so it's cooling fine, and just rebuilt the carburetor. The old float was a mess...I think I replaced all the original carb parts. I replaced the head gasket as well. The engine starts fine, runs at mid to high speed very smoothly, and will idle smoothly for about 3-4 minutes...then it'll run on one cylinder for a few seconds and then die completely. Then it'll start right back up if I give it more throttle. If I pump the bulb or bump the choke when it's bogging at idle it'll die right away.

I've got the high speed needle valve adjustment out one full turn from lightly seated, the low speed valve is out 1 1/2 turns, and I've been trying to make adjustments with that, but it ain't workin'. If I try to lean it out, it starves. It seems like it should be running too rich, if anything, based on the choke killing the engine(?).

Things I haven't done yet, and could be the issue(s): fuel pump, inspect points, condenser, plug wires, coils. Other than the fuel pump assembly, those are all obviously things that I'd have to pull the flywheel for, but I will if anyone thinks it'll help.

Sorry, guess that's a bit long winded. Thanks for looking.

EDIT: It could even be something as simple as fouled plugs, but they looked normal a couple of weeks ago. I'll get a couple of new ones tomorrow.

Re: '69 Lightwin 4hp; question on common problems/value

So I went through the ignition system with a multimeter, and got good readings on the continuity tests for both circuits on both coils, and through to the plug boot ends. As far as I know, these are all original '69 parts, except for the wires. Cleaned and set the points. Reassembled the fuel pump...turns out it was put together wrong, now the primer bulb gets hard. Compression checked out at 90 on each cylinder. But, it was still idling rough and conking out at low RPMs. Compression, fuel, and spark are all good, so I'm going kind of crazy trying to figure out the issue.

Then the incredibly obvious hits me: check the plug gaps, dummy . Set them at .030, as they were wide by about .015 or so. Started it up, and it idles like a champ now. I think with some J6C's it'll idle even more smoothly (J4C's in it now). I'm kind of amazed at how much difference that tiny gap made.

It was a good learning experience, as I now understand the magneto working parts in basic layman's terms. Please excuse my very old-tech cell phone video quality:

Cheers guys!

Heh. Funny to see this thread pop up right now, I just got one of these motors in unknown condition for $60 when picking up a parts motor for my 85hp 'rude. Figured its gotta be worth at least $60 if I were to part it out.

I got to test the engine today for a several hour trolling session, and it ran pretty well. Smooth, sipping gas, good throttle response. However, after 30-40 minutes, it would cut out immediately, though I was able to keep it alive once pumping the primer bulb. It would also start right up immediately after cutting out. So I'm going to get a new fuel pump...I should've done this already, but they're rather pricey. About what I paid for the whole engine from marineengine.com.

This is the one they sell, which is the OEM part: Evinrude Johnson OMC 0388684 - Fuel Pump @ MarineEngine.com

And this is the one I can buy from iboats, for half the price, though not OEM or specific to this engine: Fuel Pump for Johnson, Evinrude 397274 395091 391638 397839 - Sierra 18-7350 - iboats

I know they're not the same, but it should fit and work, correct? Thanks in advance, and please forgive my extreme cheapskate tendencies...I'd simply rather not spend that much on a fuel pump.
