I have a 1969 100 hp merc that I took out for the first time. its on a 15' bass boat and man did she fly!! But then I started hearing funny noises and I got her trailered and home and this is what I found. not sure what happened and dont know everything that needs replaced. definitely a bearing carrier, probably a prop, and hopefully not a case. would like to know some thoughts on cause and repair! thanx!

I know you checked the oil in the lower unit before you went out; looks like you need a replacement lower unit now from the looks of it

I'm not sure about his 69, but I had to modify the 73 1500 lower I put on my 66 850. I no longer have the reverse lock on the 850 but I have power trim so I don't need it. I had to cut the shift shaft a bit to make it fit, but it does work.

yes it had oil just filled it and replaced water pump before i went out. all the internals look very good hardly any wear on the gears or shafts. not sure why this happened.

Looks like you or someone forgot to install the thrust washer in front of the prop. I had that happen too me once and it was 500.00 for the lower unit case and used my gears. That was in 1987.

Looking at the housing, i would say you were luckly to get back to the launch. There wasn't anything holding the bearing carrier in, it looks like slmost all the threads are gone. A few good blasts in reverse and the prop along with the shaft, bearing carrier, and reverse gear might have been sitting on the bottom of the lake

lol I had to use a trolling motor to get back it didnt want to go into gear at all! not sure about thrust washer will research it and find out if it was there. I ha worked on bottom end prior to going out but only water pump and gear oil.
