'69 Rude 85hp , trying to run backwards

1969 Evinrude 85hp Starflight - Did run backwards, replaced anti-backwards(AB) switch so it stopped. but still fires one cycle backwards and stops, won't run foward... Cleaned advance, replace AB spring, check all ignition parts, points and timming (except amp)- all ok... any thoughts?

Dan....your battery hooked up right? Positive lead from engine to "+" on battery? <br /><br />Tell us a litle about the engine. Is it new to you? Or has this problem just cropped up. What work, if any, has been done lately to the engine and has any parts been replaced. A little history always helps.<br /><br />Thanks.

danielM If the switch (I think is a terminal) and the spring (around the crankshaft) are both intact...... Look for problems in the distributor cap under the flywheel.Also if you had the flywheel off,and didn't torgue the flywheel nut to 105 ft/lbs the flywheel key is probably sheared,and the timing is off.<br /><br />DHP

Dan<br />I've got a 1968 Evinrude 65hp that was running backwards. The problem was the ground wire from the reverse cut-off contact.Check it for corrosion at both ends.<br /> Rod
