Hello,
What are the basic similarities and differences between a 1958 7.5 Johnson and an Evinrude of the same year and horsepower. I am interested in seeing if any parts are interchangeable as these older parts are getting more difficult to come by.
Thanks to all who reply.
Although I do not post that often, I often read the wealth of information contained in the forums.
Thanks again.
Sean.

Similar - everything under the cowlings is part-for-part identical except for the paint color.

Different - anything related to the cowlings - bumpers on the intake and head for the Evinrude, face plate for the Johnson.

Thanks so much for your speedy reply.
So it is safe to say that if I find engine parts for an Evinrude of the same year,[say a carburetor] the part would bolt right on to the Johnson.
What about props? Same idea there?
Sean.

You got it, as said, pretty much everything mechanical can be swapped, just some cosmetic stuff that varies.

Where are you from? Actually, youve got mail.

Without taking time to look it up, the carburetor needles may be different length because of the different hoods they have to reach through. Little details like that are the differences between the two motors, besides the obvious cowlings and mounts.

Thanks Chris,
I live in Lindsay, near Peterborough. I own a 1958 7.5 Johnson and was hopeful that perhaps Evinrude parts would interchange should the need arise.

Thankyou very much. I hadn't thought of the difference in cowl depth which could effect the length of the needles. Great information.

Ah I use to keep a boat on Sturgeon Lake, I know your area well. Send me an email if you need something. If I dont have it I can help you get it.

Thanks again Chris. I will certainly keep you in mind. You are really my first contact in the way of locating possibly neeeded parts in the future. Hopefully I won't be breaking anything too soon but I will contact you for leads and great advice.
Yeah, Sturgeon is a very nice lake and I look forward to warmer months to see if it still has a few fish to offer up.

So, if you change carbs, just make sure you change the needles
