This motor pumps lots of water in gear but not at idle. She's a great running little motor otherwise. Should I be worried or is this how it is. I've heard that some of these off brand motors pump water only in gear to cool the exhaust and shaft and are actually air cooled. Is this the case with this motor??? Thanks in advance.

I'm "B" 's friend. The model number is 1727B. He also stated that he means that the outboard doesn't pump water when its not in gear vs. when its in gear it pumps water fine. Thanks again for your help.

Re: 7 hp Eska Golden Jet

It's a 1972 model, their last Golden Jet. It's a single cylinder so it's probably an air cooled Tecumseh powerhead. Easy enough to tell, if there are fins on the cylinder, it's air cooled.

If there is Neutral and Forward only, then the driveshaft turns over only when the motor is in Forward. The water pump is driven by the driveshaft. Shifting doesn't take place in the gearcase. There's a clutch under the powerhead instead. So the gearcase is either engaged or not, thus pumps water or not.
