I've got a 1989 Johnson 70 hp motor I just bought. I got it converted over to a tiller control today. When I hooked up the battery and tried to start it, the starter is dragging bad and will barely turn over the motor. A couple of times it turned over better but way to slow to fire it up. I have used 3 27 series batteries that are all charged up and work fine. My question is I didn't get any cables to hook up the starter to engine so I picked up a set of 8 guage wire jumper cables and used them. I put 4 guage connectors on the ends. Could these cables be my problem? I felt the positive cable and it was warm a bit after just 5-6 seconds of trying to start the engine. I took the starter apart tonight and cleaned the starter good. All the brushes looked real clean and good. the rest of the internal parts also seemed fine. Any ideas here? Man I worked like heck to get the tiller situations working ok as there never was a 70 hp tiller. I got it working great, now something else to hold me up. I want to go fishing next week. On vacation and would appreciate your ideas and advice. Txs again Glynn
