I am a first time outboard owner, and don't know much about them. I have 1991 70hp Johnson that just keeps cranking, and won't start. I just bought the boat, and there was a new power pack installed. The boat kicked over before I bought it. I pulled the pluggs and they were soaked with fuel. I dried them but no change. The last boat I had, had a bad neutral safety switch. Could this be the same problem?

Disconnect the Yellow/black wire...if it starts you will not be able to turn it off. By disconnecting it you will disable the kill switch. The Neutral start switch if activated will not let the engine turn over.

TMD

could be but there are a number of other things that could be the problem. too many to list.

Is it firing? Does it spit and sputter? does it just crank and do nothing?

The motor cranks, and it sounds pretty healthy. I was told to pull the pluggs and heat up the ends to burn all the fuel off, then try to start. I'll need to try that tomorrow.
Anyone know of any good websites to go on and locate a repair manual for this motor?

The nuetral safety switch works fine. I pulled the pluggs, heated them with a torch to burn off the fuel and re-installed them. The motor just cranks. Is there anyway to test the power pack with a voltmeter? Maybe the power pack that was installed before I bought the boat is bad?

Reel....best thing to do is get to your local Johnny/Rude dealer and get a OEM service manual. It will guide you through the troubleshootin procedure. The manuals for your engine are still available.

In the mean time....with a helper, remove each plug one at a time and hold it to a ground point and have the helper crank the engine. See if the plug sparks. A hot spark will be evident if the ignition system is good. If no spark on any plug, then either the pack is bad or the ignition coil under the flywheel is kaput. An outside chance is the timer base also under the flywheel.

Becarful while doing the spark test, lots of voltage at low amprege but can still give ya' a good wake-up call.

Again....get the manual.

OBJ,
Thanks for the advice. I will be getting a manual this week. AS for the motor, IT'S RUNNING!!!!!
Seems like I just had a case of flooding and fouled pluggs. I pulled the pluggs and torched them to burn off the fuel. Then I cranked the engine for about 20-30 seconds to get the fuel out of the cylinders. I checked for spark on all three pluggs and had it. Installed the pluggs, and a few cranks later, she's running. Idle sounds good. Thanks to all for your help. You're all a great bunch guys. Thanks for the knowledge.

Steve - "Reel Em In"
