Dropewd lower, replaced impeller kit, replaced lower, no reverse. pulled lower, lower shift mech works while dropped, set all to neutral, replaced, start motor, have fwd, but no reverse?
With the throttle handle in the neutral setting, check prop to make sure it spins freely to both directions. Now put the throttle handle into the forward postion, and check prop to make sure it is engaged(it should not spin in either direction). Now drop the lower unit again. on the front part of the lower unit will be a short grooved shifter rod. What this rod does is shift the gears into the forward-neutral-reverse position. While changing your impeller you might have moved it a bit which will throw it out of whack. Note the position it is in, now put the unit back on and use only one bolt to tighten them together and check the shifter and prop again. You might have to adjust the shifter rod until the throttle handle and lower unit match up. It is easier to take off and replace the lower unit when it is in forward gear. I hope this wasn;t confusing, let me know how it goes.
I have done just about every thing. Just pulled again- 5th time-, with shifter in reverse. once dropped, turned lower unit shift mechanism full clockise to reverse. Spun drive shaft, prop turned in reverse. Put back together, started, would shift to fwd, BUT ONCE AGAIN NO REVERSE. <br />I think its time for the Yamaha Dealer Mechanic?
I have always had much better luck on a Yamaha in forward. I watched several Yamaha factory service people fight one at a race years ago before taking that suggestion and popping it right on. Turned a 10 min max gearcase change into an hour struggle. The neutral deal works for Mercury's though.
Thanks Ray, I'll sleep on it tonite and give it a shot tomorrow early. I have gotten this drop lower unit down to a science now- 10 minutes tops! ONE LAST SHOT! Will let y'all know results tomorrow.
