I have a early 70's chrysler 70HP outboard. it is 3 cylinder, has a distributor, coil and c-d box. you probably know this. anyways, I can't get spark out of it at all. I cleaned the distributor, the rotor and the cap with sand paper. plugs look good, coil seems ok. why no spark? is there just a key for this or is there a loop for a kill switch I am missing. got the boat and the wire harness was cut because they painted the boat and took the motor off. put the wires back together and nothing. it cranks over fine and has a ton of compression. I can't figure it out and I am pretty mechanically inclined. I have a service manual for this and it doesn't seem to help. thanks. in the pic there is no coil but its back on now.

Re: 70hp Chrysler outboard with no spark. Help!

ok, I got a marine battery my grandpa had. don't think he will use it. anyways, upon cranking it over, there is juice into that black box. there is a blue for ignition and a white for tach. they both have juice when cranking. there is no juice from the box to the coil. also, there is this lead that is like gray with a black stripe around it that goes from that box to the distributor. there is not juice there. what is that one? I hate to go replace parts that arn't bad. like replacing a starter when its bad, etc.

Could you post the model no. and serial no. It should be located on a data plate just below the carbs. In the Seloc manual they have extensive information on 4 different ignition systems for Chrysler outboards. I think that the pages that apply to your ignition system are 5-61 to 5-76. Maybe your local library still has the Seloc manual. They are always up for bids on ebay. I got a brand new one for $10 last year.

When you tested for spark did you ground the spark plug threads to the motor? If not you will not see a spark

I noticed in the Seloc manual, page A-49, that there is a interlock switch on your distributor. Are you sure that it is functioning correctly? If you need the diagram, let me know at scotiany12302@yahoo.com.

i have the same prob with my 70hp. I have voltage to the powerpack(blackbox), but nothing out of it to my coil and distributor. I'm assuming that the pack is bad, and ordered a used one(20$)and a manual from ebay. I'll let ya know if it works.

Did you see if there is voltage to the distributor? Did you do a restistance test for the points?

I have engine model 707HD... 73 chrysler 70HP.. replaced CD box, cleaned points (I would try that next), rebuilt carbs and it runs like a dream

Re: 70hp Chrysler outboard with no spark. Help!

There needs to be TWO power leads to the CD box. The blue powers the electronics and there should be a RED that is connected to the red terminal on the engine. This charges the capacitors inside the CD box. You should have gotten a spark at the battery when you connected it because this lead should connect directly to the battery side of the solenoid and is always under power.
There should be a red wire coming from the cd Box, going under the flywheel, and connecting to the red terminal on the engine terminal board. There should be two other red wires on that terminal. one going to the citcuit breaker below the terminal board and another coming from the voltage regulator on the starter mount. Try posting a photo of the terminal board.

Thanks: I have a habit of not looking at the original date of posting--hate when that happens.
