I have had elec. problems with cars in the past and as for a a wire going to ground it helps to fire it up in the dark of night and any power going to a ground is much easier to spot. Rick.

Your motor has a low-tension magneto with the external coils. It also has a driver coil under the flywheel. Those mags can be VERY fussy about having the points gapped correctly and at exactly 180-degrees opposite. I would double check and reset the point gap and look for slop in the plate as it sits on top of the powerhead, as that can also cause variance in the point gap...

Chinewalker. Excellent thought there. I had a van once that would backfire every once and a while. Once it split the muffler right down the seam. After what seemed like forever I found there was looseness in the distributor shaft and it would move side to side causing the points to open close when they weren't supposed to. Great idea. Rick.
