I recently bought a 1970's era 20hp Merc. and it had a bad lower end, so I bought anther complete Merc and took the lower end off. When I went to put the lower end on I could not get the shift rod on the lower end to line up in the cup on the motor. I thought maybe since it was a different year it would not work. However, when I went to put the lower end back on the motor it came off of, I could not get it to line up on it either. I have tried wiggling the cup and have had no luck. When I go to put it on I put the motor and the lower end in the same gear so I am now lost on what to do. Any ideas?

Try both in neutral, if that doesn't work try both in FWD. Just be patient and it will mate up.

I think he's talking about the shift-shaft coupling. At least I hope so...
