find out the reason it is getting hot. if you by pass you're going to burn it up. go to the engine faq and read awakening a sleeping outboard. it sounds like the power pack or coils are getting hot and failing. do you havae spark on all cylinders when it does this.

either you have a funky control, or the start/run lever is the fast idle lever, you lift it when starting and lower it after the engine warms up to the run possition so the engine idles to shift. can you post a picture of the control

the screw o the front is a tension screw to adjust how hard the throttle lever is to move. the safety switch is inside the control and only keeps the engine from starting in froward or reverse your problem is not in the control box. if it was the safety switch the engine would never turn over. it is a very simple switch and never goes bad. if the shift lever is not in neutral it will not turn over.
