Re: 71 evenrude. stuck in forward can't get neutral or reverse
You have a hydroelectric drive motor. You're either not getting power to your L/U solenoids or the solenoids are bad. Is this a new problem or has the motor always done this for you. Also make sure the L/U has clean, water free, type "C" oil in it. Anything else, and it won't work. Other things it could be are a bad shifter switch or a bad hydraulic pump. I would start by checking your shifter switch to see if it's functioning properly. Run a 12 volt from your battery and attach it to the green wire on the switch. Start the motor. If it starts in neutral, your neutral solenoid is good. Now run 12 volts to both the green and blue wire. Start the motor, it should be in reverse. If it is, you have a bad switch. Next get a multitester and put it on the ohms setting. Put one lead on the blue wire and then the green, put the other lead on a good ground. You should read about 5 ohms of resistance. This indicates your solenoids are good. I would clean the hydraulic pump by draining your L/U oil and filling with dextron 2 ATF. Run for a few minutes then drain. Re-fill with Type "C" L/U fluid and give it a try. Let us know what happens. Good luck.
