I just bought this 71' Evinrude, guy said he inherited it, took it to "Dry Dock", (local outboard repair shop) to see if it ran, they said it did, then it's sat in his garage for the last couple years...motor looks in good shape well taken care of. I tried to get it running, and it won't fire up. pulled a plug, which is a champion L82C, don't know if thats the right one, but it looked almost new and was wet with fuel. grounded it to the block and checked for spark, there was spark.....don't know what to do next, can any one out there help me?? I just ordered the factory service manual off the net, but even then I'm kinda new at this.....ok not KINDA, VERY NEW at this. please help, thanks John

If you have spark & fuel...the only thing that is missing is compression. Do a compression check on each cylinder. You want even PSIs about 100 or more!

You rings may need to get loosened up after sitting to long. Put some 2 stroke oil in each cylinder and pull the recoil starter a few time with the plugs removed. Let it sit and do it again.

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum, John. Do the troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.
