I picked up a new fuel line assembly and fittings for my 71 Johnson 60hp. I just grabbed the ones Wal Mart carries, but it does not fit my engine connection. Are the 71s different?

Yes, the package said it was for Johnson/Evinrude. The part of the connector that the fuel line hooks into fits fine. It is the hole where the locking pin goes into the connector. The pin on the engine is bigger than what the connector will accept.

Is the motor connector different from the tank connector?

sounds like it is , you could always swap out the connector on the motor to match the more current end. i thought that even though your motor was a 71 it had the same pins. i will look into it for ya.

you can always buy pass the motor connector, and just use the hole, and connect directly to the fuel pump. will it fit the fuel tank?

Re: 71 Fuel Line to Engine Connection

are you talking about the connectors for a removable fuel line? I had a similar puzzlement: the pin on the motor was large, and fit only the old female fitting; I couldn't find a fitting with a large enough hole. even drilled one out. After few years I was looking hard at it and saw that the "large" pin actually was standard, and had the inner brass sleeve from the old connector stuck on it! The large female hole was so b/c its sleeve was gone.

I recall, when shopping for connectors, that OMC makes two sizes, one for smaller motors/fuel lines and one for larger, so an "OMC" package still might be incorrect.

Here's another possibility: the motor has been altered. At our hunt club when we all had OMC's except one Yamaha, we put an OMC male fitting on the motor so we could use any gas line. I have also made converters: a Yamaha female on 3" hose to OMC male. I also carry a Yam and an OMC fittings, both genders, in my tool box. You never know.

Yeah, I'll bet the engine side connector has a brass sleeve from an old hose connector stuck on it. It happens all the time. Once you get that sleeve off, everything will be fine.

Ding Ding Ding....we have a winner!!! I just went out and looked and sure enough the old sleeve was on the fitting. Pulled it off and the new one slipped right on!

Thanks guys!!

Re: 71 Fuel Line to Engine Connection

Somewhat related question but not the same problem: I have a 77 Evinrude 25. I wanted to increase my range so I bought a second tank and OMC fuel connector from Bass Pro. The hose clips onto the new connector properly, but it does not seal, when I pump the bulb to prime it sprays fuel out around the connector. Would there be a slight difference in size due to year? Or did I just get a faulty connector and should I pick up another one?
