71 Johnson 9.9hp won't run

I have a 1971 9.9hp Johnson with a short shaft. I can get it to turn over but it won't stay running. It stalls out shortly after starting. I replaced the fuel pump and it took care of the problem for a short time but now I have the same problem again. I have also replaced the coils as one of them was cracked and set the points to .020. I use the same fuel tank and line to run a 1969 6hp Johnson and it starts and runs fine. I was thinking of swapping the fuel pump out of the 69 into the 71 Johnson. Would this work? They look the same.<br /><br />thanks for any input.

Hi Radar,<br /> Sounds like the carburetor is gummed up or has some floaters in it. An easy test for the fuel pump is to disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and route it over the side of the cowling into a clean coffee can. When you pull it over you should get a good fuel flow squirting into the can.<br /> Also, please provide your model number for the 9.9, as the first year for the 9.9 was 1974. In 1971 they had a completely different motor - the 9.5...<br />- Scott

When was it run last? sounds like a carb cleaning is first order of business for sure. Is it stalling out at idle or midrange or what? Here's a site that walks you through 9.9s, mostly for 74 and newer, but it should help. Chinewalker, Knobby, thanks for the reply. The motor is a 9.5 hp I believe and the model number is 9r-71r. Just curious as to what the difference could be between the 9.5 and the 9.9 hp's. Is there a good place to go to get a carb rebuild kit?

Hi Radar,<br /> The 9.5 and 9.9 are two completely different designs - I think the only common parts might have been the lower unit drain screws. The 9.5 was built from 1964 to 1973, and the basic design of the 9.9 was built from 1974 onwards (and also came in a 15hp version). The 9.5 was never offered as anything more than the 9.5 hp model. Both were decent designs, but I think the 9.9 was a hardier design...<br /> Carb kits should be available through your local Johnrude dealer...<br />- Scott
