I have what I belive to be a 1972 35 H.P. Mercury outboard.I replaced the water pump and it pees strong cold water out.It starts and runs real smooth, but I have warm water coming out the exhaust and (or) the upper case in front.Would the tube O ring cause this problem?Head gasket?I put all new parts in while I was there, but it may have gotten ajared during assy.Any ideas? Thank you.

Hi Temac8,
Only a fraction of all the water pumped goes out the tell-tale line, with the majority of it going out the exhaust (at the propeller). Some will also get misted out the exhaust reliefs in the rear of the motor leg, just under the powerhead. If the rubber gasket at the base of the exhaust tube is missing, jammed in wrong, or otehrwise damaged, you can get some water and exhaust coming out of places it's not supposed to...
- Scott

Most likely your motor is from the early to mid sixties. As for a head gasket problem, impossible. Your motor like any merc based on the old inline design never had a head gasket.
