Hi everyone. I`m working on a 72-74 60 hp Chrysler outboard for a friend who recently purchased it running. I don`t have the model and serial off hand, (can get it) but I know its a 72-74 60 hp 2 cyl with the Prestolite ign update kit. Motor was bought running. I did`t have the chance to go through it when it was running. Anyway 50 psi top cyl, 20 bottom, bottom piston has mechanical damage all over the top, cylinder is scored from what looks like a ring failure. Top piston is good aswell as the cylinder. Piston wash looks decent, aswell as the plug chop was running mint of not a tad rich when it rolled the ring. Was running 50-1 premix I think.

What my plan of attack is: is to bore bottom cyl .30 over and hone and re-ring the top.
I can`t find very many parts listings for this motor, I`m going to need a piston, 2 sets of rings and a gasket kit. I was wondering what other year and models of Chrysler motors does this motor share parts with?

I haven`t measured the pistons yet to find the size or if they are already overbored. I`ve been having some trouble getting the powerhead free from the rest of the outboard. I can get it off about 1/2 and inch then it seems like the driveshaft wont pull free.
I`m well skilled in PWCs I usually re-build a couple every year for re-sale aswell as keep my own fleet running.

Any help from the Chrysler experts would be appreciated

You are hanging up on the rubber bushing under the front half of the case (at least it sounds like it). There is a cover plate over the bushing. Drop the lower, wiggle the powerhead as you pull straight up it should come loose. From what I understand the 60hp pistons will interchange with some 55hp years? This is not confirmed nor denied, but when I was looking for a donor piston for my 55, I remember seeing 50-60hp on one that was for sale. Measure the bore, then look on ebay, I have seen alot of pistons on there in over std size, not cheap though :(

Just an FYI you may need not go 30 over, there are 10 and 20 over piston and rings out there in the world. You will need to know part numbers though.

Sounds that you have the 55-60-65Hp machine with 818cc volume. It was intrudused ion 1974 as 60Hp with MagII ign. 1977 it was 55Hp and 65Hp. 65Hp had a larger gearcase. The pistons can be hard to find because it has ports in the pistonskirt. I think the 125 or 150Hp Force has the same bore but witout the port in the piston. If you are mec. skilled you can drill the hole in the piston. Try Franz at franzmarine.com. Maybe he can help you.

Those engines had much longer rods than any other Chrysler and big bore pistons (3.375) with ports in the piston skirt. As far as I know, no one makes replacement pistons for them but try Franz. I don't think you will get lucky because last year an Aussie needed a piston, Franz had none, and I just happened to have a decent one for him. Do not bother to waste the money boring the block until you find pistons.

You can TRY pistons out of a 95-98 Force--they all used 3.375, but the rods are just a tad shorter than the 60 HP rods so port timing will be affected. AND, you would need to drill the piston ports. These ports are absolutely necessary because these engines did not have a bypass chute, just a bubble in the side of the block. Gas flow came through the piston ports and bypass ports and up through a higher set of bypass ports in the cylinder.

I do (I think) have a whole block and you might be able to talk me out of it, but shipping and import will kill you.

If it is like the early 80s models: To remove the powerhead, take off one of the lower motor mount covers and disconnect the shift linkage. If not, find where the linkage joins together and separate it. Better yet, disconnect the linkage right under the bottom carb.

Thanks alot guys... Thats the information that I was looking for. I was hoping that a 3.375" piston that you find all over ebay would work. But it sounds like this model was pretty much a breed of its own. Its looking like re-powering the boat might be a better option. If I can find a stock piston from a newer model locally (for comparison) I might measure it up and see what it would take for me to mill new ports in it. I need to do that before my machinist will bore the block. In the long run a re-power might be a better option, its looking like $400-500 by the time I`m done (If I can mill a new used piston). IMO thats too much to spend on this motor.

Thanks for the info... Much appreciated
