72 80hp mercury switch box?

Iv looked up a new switch box and it is not the same one i have the new one has 4 screws on one side and 3 on the other my switch box has only 4 on one side. Plus i used the numbers on the bottom of my switch box and come up with nothing. My motor serial is 3189038 this is the box i find everywhere http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/18-5779.htm

And is this the only thing that could cause me to have no power to coil cause i test power in and i have power but coming out the green i think the one to the coil there is nothing?

Found these part numbers, as you probably did already:

Note that they only fit:

If you only have 4 connections on one side, where do the 3 wires coming from your distributer housing currently go?

I did find this note on another site, as well:

Serial #s 3051041 thru 3052380 and 3144219 thru 3192962 were equipped with a unique ignition system for which the coil, trigger, and switchbox are discontinued. There is a conversion kit for these models that includes the more common 393-3736A79 trigger and a new switchbox and coil package. Kit # 393-3736A80

You have a ignition system that was used in 1970 to 71 (serial no 3051041 to 31922962) Mercury had a kit out to replace the whole sysem for a while but it's NLA now the merc no is 337- 4411 abd may be NLA the Rapair no is R337-4411 all they offer is to rebuild your unit. My advice would be to try to find a doner engine and strip the parts off that you need to repace the whole system

Laddies, Did that motor have an unusual ignition system. My '73 850 Merc had the conventional Distributor-based ignition. What kind was on that '72 80HP??

Chris your engine should have had the standard battery powered CD with a 393- 3736A- dist and a 332-2986A- switchbox on it, onurneez used a differant dist and switchbox. Your system use a voltage flux caused by a disc with hole turning by a senser to generate a signal to fire the box the other system was a a early try at alternator CD I belive and a winding generated the signal to tigger the system

Laddies, I had no idea that Merc had that varient. Since they went "back" to the distributor-based system I will guess it was not too successful.

i called a place in alabama today that makes the ignition parts and told him the part number i had on my box and this is what he gave me 114-2986K1 and said this is a kit which comes with box, trigger, and coil. $600 and still not for sure this will solve my problem.

Thats the Rapair part number for the kit, I have never installed one of there kits but they are the best marine electronics firm around so as long as the cap and rotor are good it should fix your problem.

Since last night I got out a manual to ck on the old system out and find that I was wrong about the system being a early try at alternator driven CD, that would have been the Lightning Energizer system used on the 1970 to 75 50HP engines. The system for the 800s was a variation of battery powered CD--Bob
