I am the proud owner of a 1972 model 50 hp Johnson. My wife's aunt bought this motor and terry bass boat new, and recently gave both to me. There is some sentimental value here. Many a fish have been landed on this boat in the Biloxi River, my favorite fishing grounds. I also learned how to waterski behind and pilot a boat with a 1972 Johnson 25. My dad's old 25 was stolen or I would still have it. This 50 has not been run in over three years and will not start. I am attempting to revive it by going through the list on the FAQ on this website. I ordered the service manual and anxiously await its arrival next week. The problem that I am trying to solve first is the gear case oil leak. It appears that the fluid is leaking from around the drain/fill screws. I find no o-rings or gaskets and have been told that some outboards have drain screws that are machined with close tolerances which do not need o-rings.

BTW, Big Bird was the name of our yellow 1976 Bayliner Jamaica.

QUESTION: Is my 1972 Johnson 50 supposed to have o-rings to seal the drain/fill screws for the gear case? If not how should I attempt getting a good seal?
