72 Johnson 9.5 - Won't start warm/flooding issues?

Hi All,

A few months ago, I picked up a 9.5 and did some restore work on it. Cleaned carb, changed impeller and lube. Was running great after that. Always starts on 1st or 2nd pull, with little force and no choke.

Recently got into the bottom of the tank and got plenty of bad gas in the system. Got it home and flushed tank and refilled with new gas, oil and added seafoam. After a lot of trying, got the good gas in and got it to start reliably and was running fine.

Since that incident, my problem is if I kill the engine after running for at least 15 minutes, it will not start, as hard as I try. I have pulled the plugs and found them with a little fuel on them. After turning over with the plugs out, I can replace them and it starts right back up.

It this a simple flooding issue or is it more related to the bad gas experience? Why would I start flooding now, after never having trouble with it?
When I cleaned the carb, I didn't find any problem with the float valve, haven't looked since the bad gas. Could this have fouled the valve?

The bottom of the tank probaby had some crud that got sucked into the carb. There is (or should be) an in-line fuel filter beside the carb that may be plugged a bit from the crud in the tank. It's probably not a flooding issue or there would be lots of fuel on your plugs. I'd clean the carb again (and the filter) and re-try. Also, disconnect the fuel line from the motor, depress the ball valve at the connection, and pump the primer bulb to force out any stuff that may be lodged in the fuel line.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Definitely worth pulling the carb, filter and lines and giving it all a once over.
I guess flooding was just the low-hanging fruit of my outboard repair brain.

Why, though, would it start up without problem and only run into gunk after it had been running for a while?
