HI
THIS IS A NEW SHOT IN THE DARK, BUT I CAN ALWAYS USE GOOD ADVICE ON MOTORS.
I HAVE GOOD SPARK ON CYLINDERS #1 & 2(TOP 2 CYLINDERS), BUT NO SPARK AT ALL ON #3. I SWAPPED OUT THE COILS TO SEE IF IT WAS THE PROBLEM AND STILL NO SPARK. (I GROUNDED THE PLUG TO THE FRAME FOR SPARK CHECK).
THINKING I MAY BE LOOKING AT POWER PACK PROBLEM. I'VE GOT A SELOC MANUAL FOR MY OLD 50 HP 1972 JOHNSON(BAD SCARRED CYLINDER). ARE THERE ANY TESTS TO RUN TO CONFIRM POWER PACK AS SOURCE OF PROBLEM?? IS THE POWER PACK REPLACEMENT # 5754 3 PACK??
IF I NEED ONE I WANT TO VERIFY I GET THE RIGHT UNIT(PRICEY LITTLE BUGGERS)
THANKS IN ADVANCE
DK/HEAD SCRATCHER

When you say "I HAVE GOOD SPARK ON CYLINDERS #1 & 2(TOP 2 CYLINDERS), BUT NO SPARK AT ALL ON #3. I SWAPPED OUT THE COILS TO SEE IF IT WAS THE PROBLEM AND STILL NO SPARK. (I GROUNDED THE PLUG TO THE FRAME FOR SPARK CHECK)."

If that means that the coil that was not originally firing is still not firing, then you have a bad coil.

But if that means that a different coil being hooked up to the powerpack's #3 coil position is also not firing, then you have either a bad powerpack or a faulty wire between the #1/#3 sensor.

The sensors under the flywheel which lead to the powerpack..... there are three of them, one sensor fires #1, another fires #2, the remaining one fires #3. Could be a sensor.... disconnect the sensor wires from the powerpack and check them with a ohm meter to see if all read the same.

Re: 73 65HP EVIN/TRIUMPH NO SPARK ON 3RD CYLINDER

JOE
Thanks for a fast reply. By swapped out, I meant that I had replaced the coil on #3 cylinder with another working coil, and still no spark.
I'll check the wire/connection from the sensor to the pack, but I'll probably be pack shopping it sounds like.
Would this have anything bearing on a throttle/acceleration issue. I'll explain.
After the motor has been started, and idling, when you shift to forward with full throttle , say to pull a tuber/skier from a dead stand still,(or without the tuber/skier load attached to the rear of the boat), the engine stalls out. After playing/adjust the warm up lever while giving it more throttle the engine will take off, and runs great. It justs gets particular more often then not if it wants to run/play at the higher throttle. I just soaked/cleaned all 3 carbs, and overhauled them with kits, and I hope that that's it. Any ideas that might need to be tracked down.
Your thought on this is a GREAT assistance in understanding outboards more. I had an idea of the sensors, but did not clearly understand the how/what/why with them. That's clearer now, thanks again Teach/Joe.

Take care/ Thanks again for the additional brain power.Mines been soaked up by teenagers.
Dave K

DK1953, Before you go and buy a new powerpack test the electronics under the flywheel. I had a similiar problem on my 1972 65hp evinrude. I was not getting spark at WOT on the #2 cyl. I replaced the powerpack and found out it was not the problem. Take the flywheel off and inspect the timer base and stator coils to see if any wires are broken or shorted. My timer base ended up being the problem. I have also heard of people having problems like this with a loose or missing magnet in the flywheel or a sloppy Flywheel key. Good luck.

DK.... I was replying to a few different posts and for some reason was thinking "four cylinder" when I spoke about the sensors. I revised/edited my reply above. Please reread and check the sensors as suggested. Sorry for the goof.
