Re: 73 Crestliner Restoration

Lol!!! I removed all of the foam and cleaned out the area to let it dry… some of the foam was saturated.

What did the foam look like? White beaded planks?

It sure wasn't expanding urethane foam, because that stuff doesn't clean up that well.

Transom wood shavings look good.

Boats of this vintage did NOT usually have foam under the deck.

My 73 Seaswirl was loaded with foam....

This was the original foam.

That's not even enough foam to float a popsicle stick, let alone a 15' fiberglass boat... now I see why it cleaned up so well.

It's your boat and you can do whatever you want, but I would seriously consider lifting that decking and doing a proper foam job... or buy some really really good PFDs to wear while aboard.

This Crestliner is packed with foam. It has foam under the well in front of the motor, foam up under all of the gunnels, and foam under the floor.

It's actually not my boat... it's my friend's boat. How much foam is considered enough? Should the foam completely fill the space between the gunnel and the floor?

Sweet looking blue foam

I'd run with what you have for floatation foam, looks good to me. (Replace what was removed of course.)

I do have to say, besides the rotted deck section and affected stringers, the rest of the plywood looks to be in very good condition. Surprising since the fiberglass looks to only go 1/2 way up the stringers.

Re: 73 Crestliner Restoration

When I got home from work, Steve was waiting with an engine hoist in the back of his truck. We pulled the motor off, took off the original trim motor and installed the new trim motor. The biggest challenge was figuring out the wiring, since the original motor was a two solenoid, three wire system, and the new motor was a two relay, two wire system, and the motor came with very minimal instructions. But Steve figured it out!

Hey Hey Hey! Looks like you're off and running with the motor!

How's the deck and stringer repair going?

The boat is nice and dry now. We will be removing the existing stringers and making new ones soon.

Steve and I got to work on the boat. I did the trailer and Steve the floor. Once the floor was up he found that the stringers were more rotten than he thought. I worked on the trailer while he worked on the floor. The trailer is being renovated to fit this boat.

Re: 73 Crestliner Restoration

Hello!! I have a 74 Crestliner, same color and size as yours!! She has a 90 hp 1989 Mercury 3 cyl motor, and the thing flies!

What you are doing, describes what dad and I have had to do to the boat as the stringers and floor were rotton! We also removed all of the foam and repaired some of the stringers, and installed new decking.

Since we haven't done anything to the boat in the past few years, the transom is rotting out so that is comming up in a few weeks before we get into boating season.
I love these old gems, and they are best on smooth-as-glass water, and that 90 hp motor makes the boat fly! 35 mph avg.
I will send some photos when I get a chance, but in the meantime, it looks like you are doing really well with the project!

My son put the seats on the boxes that are going into the boat. He came in when he was finished and said your boatless seats are ready. :)

Once the floor was up he found that the stringers were more rotten than he thought.

That's pretty typical.

... and so is the denial before the deck is lifted and everything is checked out.;)
