I have an Evinrude starflight 125 outboard that is showing 16 volts when at idle, and the meter pegs when at full throttle. I recently charged the battery. It reads 11 volts on a voltmeter when boat is off. I have read that this is normal, but my new humminbird fish finder doesnt like it. Any suggestions?

hootey,

That engine has an "unregulated" system.

There is no way around it except to have a constant load on the electrical system (leave something on) or a resistor in-line to your electronics.

Thanks a bunch. Would an automotive regulator work? Which electronics should I regulate?

Hootey, My Merc does a similiar trick at full power. 14V at idle and 16V at full power.. However, I put a portable V-meter which I know is accurate, on the clip coming from the rectfier, and it shows 14.5V at full power. My dash V-meter is off a volt or two. The manual for Merc's say don't trust the dash meter, test the volts with a seperate meter. Mine is also not regulated by the way.

Jerry

I dont know by you, but here ist able to get an automotive low current voltage regulator for dash gauges for cars. Cheap, and keeps current at 13,2 V - solved my problem on old boat, temp gauge showing constant overheat after 20-30 min wot - motor NOT overheated. I think it was from a Ford.

I checked the voltage with my multimeter to make sure the dash guage was alright, and the results were identicle. I just want to make sure I wont foul up the ignition, or motor in any way. If not, I will get a regulator and keep or boating. Thanks 4 replys guys. Much appreciated.
