I've aquired a 9.5HP Johnson (Same as Evinrude Sportwin)

I'm wondering if anyone has tried any different pitched props and what gains/effects they suffered. I'm looking for one that'll get me a little more speed than the standard prop. I've never been able to experiment before but I'm wondering what people know and have tried. Thanks in advance.

That's one of those depends on your boat answers. Does it plane up quickly, or take a long time. If the latter, you can try less pitch and maybe gain some rpms. Have you tried experimenting with the height on the transom or tilt pin at all?

Haven't really had a chance yet. Application varies. Its a very light boat, and doesn't go bad. Probably 18-20mph. Its probably the right pitch for what I need to do with it I was just curious as to what others may have tried.

I've got two I run w/ the 9.5 and switch out depending on the boat I'm using it on. Matching the boat and finding the proper set-up makes all the difference.

I don't want to rob your thread hear but I was just given a 1973 Evinrude 9.5 a couple of weeks back. It has been stored for some time and will be a winter project for sure. Is your prop made of metal or some kind of plastic? I could swear mine is made of some man made material. I guess I could file it but I thought it might be more prudent to just ask. Good luck with your Johnson. Rick.

Re: 73 Johnson 9.5 prop

Rick, I have had several of those myself, all of mine were aluminum props. I have seen a few composite or temporary replacement props made to be light weight available for various motors. I think I have one around here somewhere that came with one of my boats.

As far as prop pitch, I've never paid much attention to it on the little motors, most that I've had just seemed to work fine the way they came. I'm not saying that a pitch change won't make it better, just that I never thought a one point change up or down would have mattered on most of my little boats. I don't recall there being all that many choices available for these? Every one I've had has had an 8-1/8" x 8P prop. I currently own three, a '69 Johnson 9.5 and both a '72 and '73 Evinrude 9.5's. all have the same, original, prop.

I'm pretty sure my alternate prop is an 8-1/4 x 8-3/4P. It makes a big difference on my livingston. But, not much on anything else.

Re: 73 Johnson 9.5 prop

Rick, I had a late 60's Johnson 9.5 that had the same prop you speak of. It never gave me any troubles, and I believe I did file some on it but you have to be careful when you do because a file will tear through whatever its made of. I believe it was like hard reinforced abs plastic or something of that sort.
