I have a 73' 1500 "tower of power" Merc that runs fine at all speeds but has to be primed (with properly mixed gas)from an oil can, directly into the carbs, to get it to start; unless it's been running in the past 5 or 10 minutes. If it has, it just might start without priming.

I don't have a manual, I did peruse the half million forum FAQs to see if anyone else had the same problem, but didn't find it if it is there, I put in new plugs, I understand there are only the top two of the three carbs have a choke gate(?).

Does this sound like a diaphram/fuel pump issue? Is there only one fuel pump on the motor?
Where is the fuel pump physically located on this beast?

I live here in the 40 below wilderness and I know nothing...Help...

Hi Marty,
Are the chokes FULLY closing off when actuated? Mercs of that vintage like LOTS of choke and one that isn't working properly can cause headaches...
Also, prime the bulb prior to starting.
- Scott
