73 Rude 50hp just stops

model 50373R runs great about 20 min then just quits. till something cools, is not running hot as i can hold hand on block. just found mechanic recpalced coils with LoFitOMC 582160, brp evinrude chart show the should be 580821. could the the coils be wrong and heating up and cutting out. they have less than 3 hours on them and it hasn't frozen here.

The coil is the correct one for your motor, it has been superceded from 0580821 to 0582160 to the present which is 0502890. Time to t/shoot the p/pack, stator, timer base etc. maybe.

found bad red wire to rectifier today. could this cause it.

Well it won't help, probably should inspect the stator for any signs of overheating such as cracks or a sticky, syruppy substance dripping off of it. A damaged/faulty rectifier can quickly damage the stator. Replace the rectifier.
