Thanks for some good help I installed the rebuilt engine today through the transom. One of the surprises to me was how well the rubber hoses and parts have held up. I am going to replace both bellows, of course but have a few questions.
The Volvo 270 outdrive seems to be in good shape. I have never had a problem with it. What recommendations would you have for pulling it down further? Should seals be replaced? U-joints seem tight. They were replaced once years ago.
Engine--302 ford V8 with 351 heads (how it came new) 200 hp written on valve covers:
I am replacing the locked up starter with a later marine starter.
Carburetor. It has a Holley 450 CFM 4bbl carb one it. There were no J-tubes from the factory. I have a kit but wonder whether to replace it with a new one?
Water pump appears solid but I wonder if it should be replaced.
Raw water pump. It is a Johnson or Jabsco with a plastic housing. I have new impeller and gaskets.
Ignition. It is a Mallory, very simple with centrifugal advance.
Manifolds. I found the parts necessary to replace all gaskets. It is an OSCO with Glastron cast into it. Should I replace the old gaskets on the end caps or leave well enough alone. I plan to pressure test the manifolds up to about 80 lbs pressure.
Intake. I have the old manifold but also have a used Edelbrock much lighter aluminum manifold. Any comments here?
I replaced the control cable to the drive. Thanks to someone who had the problem I checked it and avoided a miserable replacement job with the engine in. Should I disasemble and grease up the control mechanism.
As usual, thanks in advance for the good advice.
