74 Slickcraft carb problems

I just bought a 74 Slickcraft in pretty good shape and it runs. However, I believe there are some carburetor issues. It wants to accelerate like it should out of the hole but then it bogs down. It is almost as if it is not getting enough gas. I have put sea foam and high octone ethanol free gas in it. It ran great yesterday but today it bogged down again and then flooded where I could see gas coming of the carb. I think I may need the carburetor rebuilt. Any suggestions? It's a very cool boat and I would love to get it running the way it should. It has a Ford 302 V8 mercuiser with 188 HP I/O. I have replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump as well.

Re: 74 Slickcraft carb problems

Welcome to iboats.
If its flooding out it sounds like maybe the float inside the carb is sticking.A rebuild is definately needed, fuel leaking or coming out as you explained is no joke on a boat.I would take it into a shop now and have it serviced, for the safety of yourself and your family.

Re: 74 Slickcraft carb problems

Thanks. As soon as it seemd to be flooding out like that I immediately opened the back and saw the gas. I called to get towed in and didn't try to start again. I was the only one on the boat at the time and knew it could catch on fire which would have been a disaster. Had the fire extinguisher at the ready. Figured it was a serious problem. I appreciate the response.
