We need help!! 92 year model, 75 hp merc.... Stator went out and it had been upgraded to the new "red" series. However, we went back with new CDI stator and took out the voltage regulator and wired straight to new rectifier. All this done straight from the Seloc manual.(Great book) Anyway, now when we put meter on rectifier it shows 50 volts, we thought we may have just been checking it wrong with meter so we went to river hooked up everything showed 15 volts. Rode a little down river and battery started to sizzle. Unhooked rectifier and came back. What do we need to do? How can we find out if we put on the wrong rectifier? Wiring diagram shows no other voltage rectifier. Reminder...wired just like book shows. HELP!

You must have the regulator installed. Book is wrong. That's why they call it a regulator. It regulates the voltage to the system..

I thought the rectifier was a regulator. So if a separate regulator is required where exactly does it go? The one we took off was on top of the motor, but we were told it was installed especially for the "red" series. Can we put this one back on?

Re: 75hp merc voltage problems

Is it a Regulator/Rectifier or simply a Rectifier. Just Rectifiers change AC to DC. Regulator/Rectifiers rectifiy and regulate. Different units, but you don't have separate regulators and rectifiers.

As far as what you should do? I have no idea. I'm not particularly familiar with aftermarket ignition stuff. In my opinion you should have all aftermarket or all factory. Trying to mix and match just gets too weird.

Re: 75hp merc voltage problems

When we ordered the part from CDI we were told that it is a regulator/rectifier. Could we possibly have the two yellow wires coming from the stator backwards? Would that change the polarity coming from the stator to the rectifier?

Re: 75hp merc voltage problems

That is AC coming from the stator. No polarity. The rectifier converts it to DC.

Re: 75hp merc voltage problems

Give me the CDI part #'s for stator & rec/reg. Here's how older merc charging systems worked: The stator, generally a 9 amp unit, puts out an AC voltage on it's 2 yellow wires that vary in voltage (and frequency) according to the motor RPM. This AC is converted to DC by way of the rectifier which is 4 diodes in a "bridge" configuration. This voltage also varied as to the RPM. Merc's original design used the fact that the battery acted as a load always taking a few amps even when charged. This few amp draw shorted the output of the low-amp stator enough to cause almost "auto-regulation" of the charging system output, hence many of the older motors had no regulator. With battery technology improving (less full-charged draw) and the need for more amps because of all new the marine electronics available, the motors started coming with bigger stators and the battery couldn't self-regulate anymore. Merc started putting on a regulator that would sense the DC voltage from the rectifier and short one of the yellow stator leads to ground when the voltage got too high. This along with the battery draw would keep voltage constant. Problem with this is if a battery post loosens and doesn't take some of the extra amps, or you put on a CDI high-output stator, that sorry regulator has to do overtime work and fries! CDI makes a great unit #194-5279 that rectifies and regulates, not by shorting out the yellow leads but electronicly by just shutting off the charge circuit when the battery voltage is at 14 where it should be. This keeps the stator much cooler also. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for information. Going out now to get the part numbers to send you.

Re: 75hp merc voltage problems

The CDI part numbers for are: stator 174-5454K1
and the rectifier 154-6770. Also we are not running anything off of the battery except the motor (no accessories). We are not sure if we have ordered the right rectifier for the stator. The motor runs good. Is this a diamond shaped part or should it have been the square one (rectifier)? Thank you again so much for your help. If we need to reorder recifier would you send us the link to where we can order from.

Re: 75hp merc voltage problems

The diamond shape is the rectifier. Sounds like the regulator is bad. Replace the rectifier and the regulator with one unit #194-5279 from:

http://www.seilermarine.com/rapair/mercury.htm

Must find place to mount unit as it won't go where existing rectifier goes and you will have to splice the wires because it has pigtale wires instead of terminals. 2 yellows go in - red & black comes out. Make sure you mount it to metal to transfer heat to the block.
