Hello,

I have a 76 115 hp model 1150 mercury. The bulb is getting some small cracks in it, so I replaced the fuel line and bulb with a new one and the bulb would get hard squeezing it. But now the motor will not start, so I put the old one back on but the bulb will not get hard. I squeezed it 50 times. The orientation is correct. If I put both ends is a bucket, it gets hard.
Do I need to crank the engine will squeezing the bulb to get fuel in it?

The carbs are full of fuel and the hose is air locked tilt the engine and then pump the bulb till the air is out of the system then put the engine back down and it should be OK. You are going to spill gas so clean up the mess before trying to start the engine

Thanks Laddies. Ant idea why the new bulb would stop the motor from starting? It is larger than the old one. Too much fuel while priming?

Why do you say that? It ran just fine until I changed the bulb. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Fuel is coming out of carbs now when I prime it, but it still won't start. Changed plugs, have 12.4 volts on the battery. Compression is between 130 and 125 on all 6 cylinders. Fuel is 1 month old with 1 can of seafoam in it (15 gal tank). Cranks ok but will not start, doesn't even try to.

Disconect mercury switch and try it. If no go. Check and make sure you have spark on all 6.
If no spark then. Repost and then we can go from there. Tim

It only has one wire that goes from it to the switchbox. It is brown or black. Just disconnect it at the box. If it starts when off. You have bad mercury switch.
Tim

Re: 76 115 hp will not start

Thanks Tim, I have 9.5 volts at the brown wire on the switchbox where the trigger connects to the switch box.

Per the guide:
"On a 332-2986 switch box, check the voltage on the brown terminal (white/black for 332-47960 where the trigger is hooked up. It requires at least 9V at cranking."

I do not have a DVA meter, just a basic digital meter with volts, amps and ohms.

So with this information, would you say it was the trigger?

Parhaps - do the static switchbox test. A good one WILL make a spark a bad one won't.

-W

do you have 12V to the red terminal on the switch box?

do you have 12v at the white terminal when the key is turned on?

you need both of these. or you will have no go

Per My Outboards:
"do you have 12V to the red terminal on the switch box?

do you have 12v at the white terminal when the key is turned on?."
Yes to both

Per Laddies:
"Ck. the kill switch on the box, the mercury tilt switch, diconnect the black/yellow wire from the switch box"
No kill switch that I am aware of
I disconnected the Tilt switch
As for the Black and Yellow wires, I see the black, but not the yellow.

Don't know if it matters, but the battery is a Deep Cycle bought new this year.
