I was wondering if I can use any generic tach or have to use a special one. Also how to hook it up.

Also I need a water pump gasket and all the parts manuals I've looked at online don't list the gasket. I even called my local Evinrude repair shop and they say it's not listed or shown so it don't have one? I know it has one because I took it apart. Does anyone know the part # it is the gasket between the housing and the bottom plate. I found a whole repair kit for $25 but don't need a whole kit just that gasket.

Thanks

Nothing special about the tach, as long as it works on a signal from the alternator. 6 pulses/12 poles.

Is your water pump housing metal or plastic? I'm guessing plastic. The 1976 originally had a metal housing with no gasket. Replacement pumps have a plastic housing and do have a gasket. So, if your dealer is looking in the 1976 book, he is seeing the old metal pump and that is why he says there is no gasket. Tell him to look in the 1978 book for the plastic pump and gasket. BTW, it is part number 319586.
